Gryphons and Golden Eagles Battle in Skyline Overtime Thriller

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to St. Joseph's Long Island in overtime on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles, who sit at 14-6 in conference contests, returned to Patchogue with a 68-72 overtime victory after trailing by 10 points entering the final quarter of regulation.

Top Performers
  • Khailand Anderson-Strawder led all SLC scorers with 18 points, adding seven rebounds, four assists and a block
  • Kendall Haymore scored 17 points for the Gryphons while pulling down 21 rebounds and blocking two shots
  • Christina Reilly scored nine points while grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking a game-high five shots

How it Happened

The game started out in the same fashion as many of the team's past games, with an impressive first quarter that would hold the visitors to single-digit points while the SLC offense produced 19 points. The Gryphons got key baskets from Ariana Spanopoulos, including a triple to open the game off a pass from Colleen Coughlin. Anderson-Strawder would score four early-quarter points and Coughlin would score for herself, connecting from deep before eventually scoring from the paint in the waning seconds of the period. In total, five different SLC players would score in the period and after 10 minutes of play the Gryphons would lead 19-8. The second quarter would be a much more even affair, with SLC extending their lead to 17 points after back-to-back scores by Anderson-Strawder and a made layup by Josie Kent. The Golden Eagles would surge back, using a big three-pointer from Isabella Sierra as well as back-to-back Megan Spina layups to reduce the lead. After a scoring run, the visitors narrowed the lead to four points, but two late-quarter scores by Haymore and Anderson-Strawder gave the Gryphons a comfortable eight-point lead at halftime.

A score by Grace Carter to open the second half gave the Gryphons a double-digit lead once again, but with 7:34 remaining it would be Sierra to strike again for SJLI, connecting from deep to bring the lead down to nine points. A three-point play by Haymore re-asserted the SLC lead and an Anderson-Strawder layup with 3:22 remaining brought the lead to 12 points once again. A Haymore block on the ensuing SJLI possession would keep the momentum with the Gryphons, but the Golden Eagles would retain possession and Julianna Knice would connect from deep to cut into the SLC lead and start a 5-0 run for the visitors that reduced the lead to seven with under three minutes to play in the quarter. Another Spanopoulos triple with under a minute remaining and two last-second Haymore free throws brought the lead to double-digits once again with just ten minutes to play. The fourth quarter started with a three-point swing in favor of the visitors, as Knice was fouled shooting a three and knocked down all three of her attempts from the line. Reilly would answer with a three-pointer of her own and another three-point play by Haymore would bring the lead to 13, keeping the Gryphons ahead with just under nine minutes remaining. The teams would trade baskets before an 8-0 run by the visitors brought the lead down to five points with four minutes remaining. Haymore would knock down two shots from the line and after a couple SJLI baskets, Coughlin and Reilly knocked down back-to-back baskets with less than two minutes left to give SLC an eight-point lead with 1:19 remaining. A Megan Spina triple and four made free throws by the Golden Eagles reduced the lead to one point with 33 seconds remaining, but neither team could find the basket in the ensuing possessions, with Coughlin eventually getting to the line with nine seconds remaining and knocking down one of two shots to put the Gryphons ahead 67-65. SJLI's Spina got inside on the next possession and scored off a Casey Travers assists to tie the contest and a missed last-second heave by Coughlin sent the game into overtime.

The overtime period was a quiet one for both offenses, with an early Coughlin made free-throw marking SLC's only score and putting them ahead 68-67. SJLI would convert both ends of a trip to the line to take a 69-68 lead with 2:34 remaining and the Gryphons could not connect from the field, with the Golden Eagles extending their lead through a couple last-minute trips to the stripe to escape with a 72-68 overtime victory.
