Gryphons Advance to Skyline Semifinals with Narrow Victory over Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team escaped Throggs Neck with a victory on Tuesday night, moving on to the Skyline Semifinals. The Gryphons defeated Maritime by a score of 55-51 after a slow first half that saw the teams score a combined 39 points.

Top Performers
  • Braden Burman led all Gryphons in scoring with 17 points, shooting 50% from deep on six attempts
  • Senior Lucas Murray scored 15 points, going a perfect 2-of-2 from the field and knocking down 11 of his 15 opportunities from the line. He also pulled down nine rebounds in the win
  • Eamon Kelly shot an efficient 4-for-5 from deep, scoring 13 total points for SLC
  • Andrew Kim scored four points, but pulled down seven rebounds and distributed six assists to help propel the Gryphons to a postseason win

How it Happened

Both teams struggled on the offensive end early, as both defenses made a string of impressive stops. Despite the offensive struggles, the Gryphons used an early Burman jumper and a pair of Murray free throws to take a 4-3 lead, a mark that would hold for the first seven minutes of the game, with the score still remaining the same until a Dean Furlong free throw with 12:17, making the score 5-3. The Gryphons struck from deep for the first time, with Kelly hitting an off-balance shot from the left wing to extend the lead to five, but an immediate answer by Maritime's James O'Connell would reduce the lead to two. After an SLC turnover, Maritime's Theo Noble would score on a fastbreak jumper to tie the game, the first two of his game-high 18 points on the day. Kelly would once again answer the call, connecting from deep once again off an Andrew Kim assist, giving the Gryphons a three-point lead. After an SLC timeout, the Privateers managed an inside score and after another SLC turnover, Noble would step into a triple and connect, giving the Privateers a two-point lead with nine minutes remaining in the half. On the ensuing SLC possession it would be sophomore John Kairouz to connect from long range, taking a pass from Kelly and giving the Gryphons a one-point advantage. After a couple empty possessions on both sides of the court, the Privateers went back to Noble, who connected from deep again to grant the hosts a two-point lead. It would be the previously quiet Burman to step up next for SLC, connecting on a tough layup to tie the game at 16 points apiece with under six to play. Neither team could score for the next four minutes, with Maritime finally breaking the scoreless streak with a second-chance opportunity with 2:45 remaining. As the final minute of the half wound down, Burman would take a pass from fellow sophomore Kelly and give the Gryphons a one-point lead with 34 seconds remaining. A last-second score by Maritime's Jake Murphy spoiled the late-half lead change and gave the hosts a one-point advantage heading into the break.

Murray would get the second half started with a putback inside, but Murphy would connect from long range to answer and he would find teammate Aleksandar Begovic on the next possession to extend the home lead to four. Burman would take a pass from Murray a possession later to reduce the lead to one and after a string of free throws by Murray, the Gryphons found themselves with a 27-26 lead and over 16 minutes of game remaining. An immediate score in response by Maritime halted any momentum and the Privateers would score from deep on their next four possessions to build an eight-point lead. After a well-called timeout by coach Chris Ehmer, an Andrew Kim jumper and Kelly three-pointer off a pass by the first year allowed the Gryphons to reduce the lead to three points. A foul by SLC on the next Maritime possession sent the Privateers to the line, but a one-for-two effort by Begovic gave the Gryphons the ball down four and this time Kim would find Chris Dougherty underneath for a dunk that shifted the momentum totally in favor of the Gryphons. After a missed three-pointer by the Privateers, Burman connected on a jumper to tie the contest with 10 minutes to play. Noble would once again step up to answer for the Privateers, connecting on a layup to give them a two-point lead. After over two minutes of scoreless play, Burman would take his turn once more, tying the game again with a jumper. In a deja vu scenario, Maritime would answer with a triple and reclaim the lead. A string of SLC free throws and a well-timed triple from Burman gave the Gryphons a two-point lead with 4:35 remaining and a string of five points by Murray allowed the Gryphons to hold a six-point advantage with just over three minutes to play. A two-for-two trip to the line and a Noble layup closed the gap to two points and after a single Murray free throw the Privateers had the ball with 1:07 remaining and a chance to tie the game with a triple. After four missed shots from deep in one possession, a Murray rebound gave the senior a chance to extend the lead, making one of two shots from the line to extend the lead to four points and seal the victory for the Gryphons.
