How it Happened

The Gryphons and Maccabees found themselves tied at six points apiece before a six-point run by the Maccabees gave the hosts a 12-6 advantage in the match's all-important first set. Two kills by SLC's Aidan Roney in the following few rallies helped close the gap to four points, but the Macs would stay ahead, holding a 15-10 lead as the set progressed past the halfway point. The Gryphons used a string of YU errors to close the gap to one point, but a block by Eli Waxman gave the Macs an 18-16 lead late in the set. Nate Davis and Nicholas Fajardo earned back-to-back kills to tie the set and after a YU kill in response, Davis struck twice more, bookending another YU error to take a late-set 21-19 lead. After a YU kill, first year Jozef Kandrac would come up with a solo block to keep the SLC lead at two points. The hosts made a late surge, thanks to two SLC errors and a service ace, taking a 23-22 advantage. A Nate Davis kill in response followed by two SLC errors secured a 25-23 victory for the Gryphons to kick off the match.

The Gryphons got ahead early in the second, using three kills by Davis along with a Calle-Schulz service ace and a kill by Fajardo to take a 7-1 lead. The Maccabees slowly closed the gap, eventually using a four-point run to bring the lead down to one after three SLC errors. The Gryphons maintained a small lead before a seven-point run gave them a 24-15 advantage and nine straight set-point opportunities. The Maccabees took the next three, but a Nate Davis kill from Silva would end the set and give the Gryphons a two-set lead.

The Gryphons took an early 7-1 lead in the third set, a near mirror image of the second set. A 14-2 run in the middle of the set put the Maccabees in a position to extend the match, eventually using a Lavi Friedman kill to force a fourth set.

The Gryphons and Maccabees played close in the fourth set, with SLC eventually taking an 11-10 lead with back-to-back Kian Silva service aces. After an SLC error, the Gryphons made a four-point run, highlighted by a Fajardo kill and another Kandrac block. After taking a 16-13 lead, the Gryphons took the next seven points via three Davis kills and a Fajardo service ace, reaching 23 points. Chase Bolden gave the Gryphons match point, setting for Silva, who converted on a kill to give the visitors a 24-15 lead. After two YU points, a service error by the Macs gave SLC a 3-1 match victory.
