Gryphons Take Down Bears in Road Skyline Matchup

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team defeated St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Wednesday night three sets to one. The Gryphons fell behind after a first-set loss, but responded to take the next three sets for a 3-1 match victory.

Top Performers
  • Nate Davis totaled 30 kills for SLC and added in 13 digs for another double-double
  • Kian Silva earned a double-double as well, totaling 35 assists and 12 digs in addition to three blocks and the match-sealing kill
  • Derek Hickman had three solo blocks for SLC while also totaling six kills on nine attempts
  • Jason Ryan Ciron totaled 28 digs to lead all players in Wednesday night's match

How it Happened

The Gryphons and Bears played a closely contested first set, remaining close until a 7-2 run by the Bears in the middle of the set gave them a 16-11 lead. The hosts would stay ahead and reach set point at 24-17, but the Gryphons would take four straight points to make it a 24-21 set. After inching closer to a tied set, SLC would not be able to complete the comeback as a Lasha Kemashvili kill sealed a first-set victory for SJBK.

The Bears would take the first point of set number two, but the Gryphons would immediately respond and get ahead early in the second set. The visitors would hold their lead for the entirety of the set after blocks by Hickman, Silva and sophomore Aidan Roney helped counter any SJBK attacks. Davis totaled nine kills in the set while Hickman and Ralph Calle-Schulz joined in on the scoring. Two eventual St. Joseph's Brooklyn errors secured the set victory for the Gryphons as they evened the match at 1-1. The third set was closely-played throughout its entirety, with neither team able to pull away. A 19-17 lead favored SJBK late in the set, but Davis, Roney and Silva all earned important late-set kills to swing the lead back in favor of the Gryphons. Silva's kill secured match point before an SJBK point but the junior would find Davis for the set's final kill on the next rally, giving SLC a 2-1 match lead. The fourth and final set was close throughout, with a slight lead favoring the hosts at the halfway point, threatening to take the match to a fifth set. The Gryphons took five straight points, including two kills each by Davis and Hickman, to claim a four-point lead. From that point on, the Gryphons maintained their advantage, using a Davis kill and a service ace by the junior to reach match point at 24-16. The Bears delayed the end of the game by taking two straight points, but a kill by Silva off an assist by Ciron sealed the match victory and gave the Gryphons another important Skyline win.
