Gryphons Earn Second Straight Victory; Defeat Maccabees in Three Sets

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team won their second straight match on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Yeshiva Maccabees in three sets at the Campbell Sports Center. The Gryphons have now swept the season series against Yeshiva, defeating them twice in three sets.

Top Performers
  • Setter Kian Silva led all players with 38 assists and added eight digs for a successful day
  • Nate Davis totaled 29 kills and 14 digs for another double-double, he also added two block assists
  • Aidan Roney totaled four block assists and tallied three kills in the victory, playing in all three sets
  • Lukas Gates has four service aces and nine digs to help the winning team

How it Happened

The first set started off in favor of the Gryphons, with the hosts jumping ahead to the tune of a 7-2 lead. They would then assert themselves, embarking on a 10-0 run that saw their lead grow to 15 and seemingly foreshadow a quick match. The Maccabees would find more offensive success later in the set but kills by Ralph Calle-Schulz, Derek Hickman and Nate Davis would keep the Gryphons comfortably ahead and an ace by Gates would close out the set, 25-10.

The second set saw both teams struggle to serve early on, with the first three points coming via service errors and another just two points later. Thanks to three early-set kills from Davis, the Gryphons emerged from the opening struggle with a slight advantage, leading 7-4. Two SLC errors and an Eli Waxman kill for Yeshiva tied the score at seven in what was already a much different story than set number one. The two teams remained close through the middle of the set, with the Maccabees using costly SLC errors to take a 14-12 lead. The Gryphons would answer with a run once again, bookended by kills from Davis and Calle-Schulz, to build a four-point lead. After a YU response, Roney would take a pass from Silva and earn his first kill of the set to give SLC a 19-15 lead. After trading points for a few rallies, Davis and Hickman earned a huge double block that gave the Gryphons a 23-17 lead and threatened to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Maccabees would answer immediately with a three-point run, but a Nate Davis kill would stop the momentum and give SLC set point. An ensuing SLC error would be followed up by a Yeshiva kill, but Davis would once again be the Gryphon to answer the call, earning another kill and giving the Gryphons a two-set lead.

Yeshiva stepped up in the third set, taking advantage of costly SLC errors and taking the set's first four points. Another well-timed kill from Davis stopped the bleeding and the junior would single-handedly score the first five points for the Gryphons, all coming off the hands of his setter, Silva. Davis's scoring streak brought the Gryphons within two points and a few rallies later back-to-back kills by Calle-Schulz and Davis would give SLC a 10-9 lead. The two teams would remain knotted up for the entirety of the third set, neither allowing the other to score more than twice in a row and ultimately finding themselves tied at 21 points apiece. The Maccabees took advantage of another SLC error to claim a 22-21 lead, but it would be the last point they would score, with Davis and Roney combining to close out the match for the Gryphons and earn they second consecutive victory.
