Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Career Days by Silva and Davis Propel Gryphons to Third Straight Victory

WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team earned their third consecutive victory on Monday night, defeating the Panthers of Old Westbury three sets to none while on the road. The Gryphons won by set scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-13.

  • Kian Silva set a program record with 46 assists and added in nine digs on the defensive end
  • Nate Davis tied his career-best mark for kills in a three-set match with 33, adding in 19 digs and a service ace
  • Ralph Calle-Schulz totaled 18 digs for SLC while also tallying six kills
  • Nikos Diaz totaled six kills in two sets of play and earned an important third set solo block
  • Jason Ryan Ciron was the third Gryphons with double-figure digs, totaling 14 as the team's libero

How it Happened

The Gryphons took control early, thanks to kills by Calle-Schulz and Davis and service aces by both Davis and senior Lukas Gates. The teams remained close, but the Gryphons gradually built up a lead, taking a 9-6 advantage after an Aidan Roney service ace. The Panthers responded with a kill, but the Gryphons would answer by taking six of the next seven points, capped by a Derek Hickman and Jackson Perhaes double block. After extending their lead to 20-12, the Gryphons allowed the Panthers to make a run, with Anthony Moyett scoring three straight points before an SLC error reduce the gap to four points. Roney would notch a kill to end the run and despite two late-set points by the hosts, a very familiar Silva-to-Davis connection would end the set and give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.

The second set would see Davis really step up on the offensive end, as the junior totaled 14 kills in the set, helping the Gryphons rally after falling behind 4-0. Diaz would also get involved on the offensive end, as he joined Davis as the Gryphons slowly worked at narrowing the lead. A 3-0 run by the Panthers in the middle of the set wiped away any SLC progress, extending the lead to 13-7. A few rallies later, the Panthers found themselves ahead by a score of 16-9. Davis then put SLC on it's back, scoring six times as part of an 8-2 run and accompanying a Jackson Perhaes service ace to reduce the lead to one point. The teams would trade scores and the Panthers eventually found themselves leading 22-20 and on the verge of tying the match. Diaz answered with a kill and two OW errors gave SLC their first lead of the set. A service error returned the set to a tie, but Diaz and Davis would score on back-to-back kills to give SLC a 2-0 lead in the match.

Diaz scored the first two points of the third set for the Gryphons and Davis would score the next five, bringing the Gryphons an early 7-3 lead. A healthy dose of kills by Davis was accompanied by kills from Roney, Silva and Calle-Schulz to keep SLC ahead. Ciron, the team's libero, even earned a kill in the middle of the set to give SLC an 18-8 lead before Davis closed out the match with kills for six of SLC's final seven points, the lone outlier being a Lukas Gates ace. The Gryphons remained ahead and took a 25-13 set victory to claim a 3-0 win over the Panthers to keep their winning streak alive.
