Pechefsky Turns in Four-Hit Day at the Plate against Lightning

BRONX, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team fell in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at Lehman College. The Gryphons fell by scores of 6-14 and 0-16 as the Lightning won their fourth and fifth contests of the season.

Top Performers
  • Kristin Vargas totaled two hits on the day and scored three runs for SLC
  • Shirin Pechefsky turned in a three-hit game to open the day and added a fourth base hit in game two, driving in two runs on the day
  • Anna Brand reached base four times on three hits and a walk for the Gryphons

How it Happened

The Gryphons started off game one by getting ahead to the tune of a 3-0 lead. After Vargas singled and advanced on an error, Pechefsky singled herself, driving in the leadoff hitter to give SLC a lead. Bella Zuniga would reach base on an error that drove in Pechefsky, extending the lead to 2-0. After advancing on a passed ball, Zuniga would find herself at third base, threatening to score SLC's third run of the day. After a strikeout, Brand came up to the plate, working the count and getting a free pass to first. In a double steal, Brand would take second and Zuniga would score, giving the Gryphons a 3-0 advantage. Two of the next three batters would fall via strikeout, but the Gryphons had already gained a three-run lead. The Lightning immediately answered, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning, with a Pat Sanchez triple driving in the first run. Brand then caught a runner attempting to take second to end the inning and stop the bleeding. The Lightning would take one more on in the bottom of the second and add six more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 14-3. In the top of the fourth Vargas would score her second run of the game to give SLC another run. The Gryphons would go down quietly but come back the next inning looking to extend the game. After a walk and two quick outs to start the inning, Vargas reached on an error to score a moment later as Pechefsky singled again, driving in two more runs. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Pechefsky would be stranded as a groundout would end the inning and give the Lightning a first-game victory.

The second game went the way of the Lightning, in a much more decisive fashion. Nine first-inning scores on six hits allowed the hosts to get ahead early and keep the SLC bats quiet. Six more runs in the second inning came via a pair of Lehman homers, further extending the lead and putting the Gryphons down by 15. An RBI groundout in the third would supply the 16th and final run for the Lightning and while a fourth-inning double by Brand would give the Gryphons a runner in scoring position, they would not be able to capitalize before falling in game two.
