Gryphons Battle SJLI in Closely Contested Third Set

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team fell in three sets to St. Joseph's Long Island on Thursday night, two days before a rematch in Patchogue to kick off a Skyline tri-match also featuring Ramapo. The Golden Eagles have lost just four matches this season, all of which came at the hands of nationally ranked teams.

Top Performers
  • Nate Davis led the offense with eight kills
  • Jason Ciron paced the defense with five digs
  • Jozef Kandrac totaled two block assists to lead SLC

How it Happened

The Gryphons kept the set close off the bat, falling behind 11-8 but remaining within striking distance thanks to errors by the Golden Eagles. At 11-8, the visitors took control, taking 14 of the next 15 points to claim a 1-0 advantage. The second set was a similar story, with a 5-4 lead providing hope for SLC but an ensuing 9-0 run by the Golden Eagles bringing the set score t0 14-4. The Gryphons would get a Nicholas Fajardo kill late in the set, but the Golden Eagles would handle the set, taking a 25-10 lead to earn a two-set advantage.

The third set was a different story, with the Gryphons hanging with the visitors throughout, first thanks to a huge double block by Kandrac and Nikos Diaz and then by a string of kills by Davis. A kill by Davis and an SJLI error gave SLC a 13-10 advantage halfway through the third set, interrupting what was a previously comfortable lead for the visitors. The Golden Eagles immediately corrected their lapse, taking the next five points and holding the lead despite multiple late-set scores by the Gryphons.
