Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Gryphons Face Conference Leaders in Patchogue Tri-Match

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team fell to both St. Joseph's Long Island and Ramapo in Saturday morning's tri-match in Patchogue. The Golden Eagles and Roadrunners finished first and second in the conference last season and both entered today's tri-match undefeated in Skyline contests. The Golden Eagles defeated the Roadrunners in three sets in the final match of the day.

Top Performers
  • Nate Davis led the SLC offense with 19 kills and added in 12 digs on the day
  • Jason Ciron totaled 14 digs for the Gryphons
  • Kian Silva totaled 23 assists, adding in nine digs and two kills

Match 1: SJLI def. SLC 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-13)

The hosting Golden Eagles wasted no time building a lead against the Gryphons, taking the match's first five points via three kills, an ace and a double block. The Gryphons would not lay down, as Davis scattered kills throughout the set, but it would not be enough to bring SLC within striking distance. A Jozef Kandrac solo block energized the team late in the set, but SJLI took the next two points to claim a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set was a similar story, with an early 4-0 lead favoring the hosts and a mid-set six point run helping them extend their lead to 13-4. Davis would once again scatter a handful of kills throughout the set, but it would not be enough as a service ace would seal set number two and give SJLI an opportunity to sweep the Gryphons for the second time in three days. The third set started out as a back-and-forth affair, but after a 3-3 tie the Golden Eagles took six straight points to once again build up a sizable lead. Kills by Davis and even Silva, the SLC setter, would not be enough to narrow the margin and even a late-match double block by Kandrac and Silva would not stop SJLI from taking the set and the match just two points later.

Match 2: RAM def. SLC 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18)

The Roadrunners got ahead early and maintained their lead, taking the first five points of the match, and seven of the first eight, to build a lead over SLC. Kills from Davis, Silva and Ralph Calle-Schulz would keep the Gryphons in the set, but a seven point swing in favor of Ramapo gave them a ten-point advantage in the first set. A kill by Davis would stop the run and on the ensuing rally Kandrac would once again be a part of a big SLC block, this time partnering with first year Jackson Perhaes to block a Ramapo attack. Despite the halting of momentum, the Roadrunners maintained their lead and a service ace secured a first-set victory over the Gryphons. SLC took its turn getting ahead early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the second set against the Roadrunners. The lead slowly closed, but the Gryphons were able to remain in control halfway through the set, staying ahead until Ramapo used a kill and service ace in succession to tie the set at 18 points apiece. The Gryphons answered with a kill of their own, off the hand of Perhaes and followed that with a Ramapo error to take a two-point lead. After a substitution, the Roadrunners took the next three points and seven of the final eight points of the set to prevent the Gryphons from tying the match at one set apiece. The Gryphons stuck around in the final set, benefitting from an early-set Nicholas Fajardo service ace and multiple Ramapo errors, but unable to stay with the Roadrunners, who comfortably built a 13-5 lead midway through the set. Calle-Schulz and Davis both tallied kills down the stretch, and the latter earned a service ace, but it would not be enough as Ramapo took the set by a score of 25-18 and the match by a score of 3-0.
