Three-Run Sixth Inning Secures Doubleheader Sweep over Maccabees

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team defeated the Maccabees of Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon, taking both ends of the day's doubleheader. The Gryphons defeated the Maccabees 12-0 in the first contest before a comeback 8-6 victory in game two.

Top Performers
  • Senior Anna Brand totaled three hits and drove in three runs for the Gryphons, allowing no stolen bases from behind the plate
  • First-Year Kyra Johnsen racked up five hits, including a game-one triple, driving in a total of four runs for SLC
  • Shirin Pechefsky pitched five total innings for the Gryphons, allowing no earned runs and striking out six batters while earning her first two wins of the season. The sophomore also scored five runs while driving in two RBIs on five total hits
  • Bella Zuniga pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six batters. Zuniga also racked up three RBIs on two hits

Game One: SLC def. YU 12-0

The Gryphons took control early, putting up seven runs in the bottom of the first. The first two runners reached for SLC before Johnsen's aforementioned triple, which opened the scoring and gave SLC a 2-0 lead. Brand, Heather Yung, Zuniga, Juliet DeLap, Kristin Vargas and Pechefsky all added hits later in the frame, with Zuniga driving in two runs and Brand, Vargas and Pechefsky all plating one run each. Pechefsky struck out two of the four batters she faced in the next inning to give the Gryphons a chance to build on their lead. Johnsen then led off the bottom half of the inning with her second extra-base-hit of the day, a double to center field. Brand added on her second hit of the game before Kate Hansberry's infield single drove in Johnsen and moved Brand into scoring position. After a fielder's choice, DeLap drove in her first run of the day, scoring Hansberry and giving SLC a 10-0 lead. Vargas stepped up to the plate for the third time, singling to left and driving in Sarah Lawrence's eleventh run before leaving first early to end the inning. After two more strikeouts for Pechefsky in the top of the third, SLC returned to bat with a double-digit lead. The pitcher helped herself out with a single before her battery mate Brand followed suit two batters later. Ariana Spanopoulos walked to load the bases and Mikkie Garcia did the same, earning an RBI as Pechefsky came home to score SLC's twelfth run. Zuniga headed to the mound to start the fourth, allowing no hits and striking out four Maccabees in the final two innings to seal the victory for Sarah Lawrence.

Game Two: SLC def. YU 8-6

The Maccabees came out swinging in game two, opening the first frame with a single to the left side. YU's leadoff hitter would look to get into scoring position, but Brand would cut her down and clear the bases. The next two hitters would continue YU's game-opening hit streak, with a single and double both going to left field as the Maccabees took a 1-0 lead before the Gryphons took to the plate. Vargas immediately responded for SLC, opening the bottom half of the first with a single through the right side of the infield. Pechefsky moved Vargas to second and Johnsen drove in the leadoff hitter, picking up right where she left off in game one. Brand reached on an error by Yeshiva's second base player, driving in Johnsen as the Gryphons took a 2-1 lead after one inning. The second inning saw both teams go down rather quietly, with an inning-opening hit for the Maccabees being the frame's lone hit. The top of the third featured a pair of YU singles, but the Maccabees could not convert and remained trailing 2-1. The bottom of the fourth opened with a Pechefsky single before Johnsen reached base on an error. Brand then added to her day's total with a two-RBI double to center field, plating both base runners and giving the Gryphons a pair of insurance runs. The fourth inning was a similar story for both teams, with three batters coming to the plate in each half inning and neither team able to get anything going offensively.

Zuniga continued working in the fifth inning, with her second straight 1,2,3 inning as she forced three straight groundouts to keep the Maccabees off the scoreboard for the fourth consecutive inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Gryphons once again got a runner on via a Kyra Johnsen hit and Brand drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Pechefsky took the mound for the sixth inning, hoping to keep the Gryphons ahead and secure the team's second victory of the day. After two of the first three YU batters reached on errors, back-to-back singles for the Maccabees reduced the lead to three and loaded the bases. After getting back to the top of the lineup with two outs, another SLC error plated two runs for the visitors, bringing them within one run of the lead and putting runners at the corners. A HBP loaded the bases before a walk would bring the tying run home. With a chance to take the lead, YU's Talia Finn reached on an error to second base, driving in one run before a second YU runner was thrown out at the plate by Vargas to keep the Gryphons within one run. The Gryphons got a burst of life in the bottom of the sixth as Kate Hansberry stepped to the plate. The first year from Thailand earned a walk and proceeded to steal both second and third base as the Gryphons attempted to regain the lead. After Sonia Saha walked as well to put runners on the corners, Vargas stepped up to the plate and delivered her biggest hit of the year, a single down the left field line that drove in Hansberry to tie the game. Saha was thrown out advancing to third on the play and with two outs, Vargas stood on second (after advancing on the throw) as the go-ahead run. Pechefsky delivered in her next at-bat, doubling to center field as she drove in Vargas and giving SLC the lead. Johnsen remained red-hot, driving in Pechefsky as SLC took a two-run lead into the top of the seventh. Pechefsky got to work immediately, forcing a groundout back to herself before striking out the frame's second batter to bring the visitors to their last out. The sophomore got YU's next batter to ground out to Johnsen and third to seal the victory after the team's sixth-inning comeback.
