Gryphons Celebrate Four Seniors before Season Finale against Knights

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawerence softball team celebrated senior day on Saturday, May 4th as they wrapped up their 2024 season with a matchup against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College. The Gryphons fell 13-0 and 18-0 to the Knights and completed their season with two conference victories.

Top Performers
  • Senior Kristin Vargas earned a hit in both games, wrapping up her final doubleheader with a pair of singles
  • Heather Yung and Sonia Saha both reached base in game one after singles up the middle
  • Shirin Pechefsky tossed 6.2 innings, striking out two and forcing 12 flyouts. She also added a hit in game one

How it Happened

Despite two first-inning walks, Pechefsky kept the Knights off the board in the first inning, giving SLC a chance to strike first. Vargas opened the frame with a single up the middle and Pechefsky would advance the senior to second base with a well-placed bunt. The next two Gryphons would go down via strikeouts and despite getting a runner in scoring position, the score would remain 0-0. After a pair of singles to start off the second, the Knights threatened to take the game's first lead. A wild pitch and an error would bring both runners in eventually and after one-and-a-half innings, SLC faced a two-run deficit. Three more strikeouts for MSMC's Grace MacDonald sat the Gryphons down in order and kept the lead at two. A walk and an RBI double would add to the MSMC lead, but a strikeout by Pechefsky would keep the lead at 3 runs heading into the bottom of the third. Two more SLC strikeouts and a flyout by Vargas would end the inning and an eight-hit inning for the Knights would see them extend their lead to 11-0 in the top of the fourth. The Knights would remain in control, with the final seven Gryphons putting the ball in play but unable to generate any offense as the visitors took a shutout victory.

The second contest saw the MSMC offense pick up in the early innings, putting up four runs each in the first two frames before a seven-run outburst in the third inning to take a 15-0 lead. Saha and Vargas both singled in the bottom of the third but would both be stranded as SLC would be unable to convert. A two-run homer for the visitors would extend the lead in the fourth and three groundouts and a walk in the bottom half of the frame would keep the Knights ahead 17-0. A pair of MSMC singles allowed them to add a run in the top of the fifth and despite a single by Yung to start the bottom of the fifth, the Gryphons would not be able to get on the board and wrap up their season with a shutout defeat.

The Gryphons have now completed their 2024 campaign, finishing with an overall record of 2-24 and a mark of 2-16 in Skyline contests. The Gryphons graduate four players as they look to retool for a 2025 campaign after seeing promising development from key returners.
