Gryphons Kick Off Season with Day One of the SUNY New Paltz Tournament

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's soccer team kicked off their 2024 campaign with a matchup against SUNY Poly as part of a tournament hosted by SUNY New Paltz. The Gryphons fell to the Wildcats from SUNY Poly by a score of 0-3 and will be returning tomorrow for their second and final game of the tournament.

How it Happened

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the ninth minute, just seconds after a beautiful effort by Zalis to prevent a score following a corner kick. SUNY Poly's Jhonny Theze placed the ball in the bottom left corner after crossing to the right in front of the goal. The Wildcats would score once more before the halftime intermission, as a pass across the box would be redirected and Johnpaul Jerome would be the beneficiary, finding the back of the net and putting the Gryphons in a two-goal deficit. In the second half, Zalis would save the first two shots he faced, but it would be Theze again to find an opening, this time on a run down the left side of the field, going cross-field once again to score in the bottom right corner. Bronshvag would put a shot on goal in the 88th minute but a save by Tyler Barth would keep the Gryphons off the scoreboard.

The Gryphons (0-1) will return to action on Saturday, August 31st, as they return to New Paltz for a matchup with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4:30 PM. The Engineers suffered a 1-0 defeat to SUNY New Paltz today prior to Sarah Lawrence's matchup against SUNY Poly.
