Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Zach Perbeck

Women's Volleyball Opens Season with Four-Set Victory over Elms

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team split their opening day tri-match, falling to Hunter before defeating Elms in four sets to round out the day. The Hawks defeated the Blazers in the day's middle match, earning two victories before leaving Bronxville.

Top Performers
  • Athena Kazos led the Gryphons in kills with 21 while adding five aces, 24 digs and two blocks
  • Kaille Ferguson paced all SLC players in digs with 35 across the two four-set matches while adding in a half dozen assists
  • Valerie Hertig racked up 17 assists in each match, giving her back-to-back double-digit assist outings in her first two collegiate matches

Match 1: Hunter vs. Sarah Lawrence

The Gryphons got ahead early, taking a 4-1 lead in the first set of the season thanks to a Jenna Lehnhart and Athena Kazos double block. The Hawks would claw back but a run of three consecutive service aces by Kazos would extend the SLC lead to 13-7. After a point for the Hawks, seven of the next nine would go to the Gryphons, with Kazos registering back-to-back kills to give SLC a 20-10 lead. The visitors would then take the next five points, reducing the lead to 20-15 and giving the Gryphons more pushback than they had initially. SLC would stay ahead, taking the set 25-18 eventually and getting out to a one-set advantage in the first match of the day. The second set would not be as positive for SLC, as an 11-2 lead for Hunter to start the set would turn into a 25-14 second-set victory that was clinched by an Amina Moummad service ace. The third and fourth sets would be similar stories, with SLC falling 25-16 and 25-17 and seeing Moummad clinch the match with a kill in the fourth and final set.

Match 2: Elms vs. Sarah Lawrence

The first set of this match started close, with a 5-5 tie setting the tone for a long day ahead. The Gryphons expedited the set with a seven-point run, featuring a Hertig/Lehnhart double block and a Kazos kill via a Ferguson assist. After an Elms kill to stop the run, the Gryphons took the next eight points to bring the score to 20-6. Nikolet Vataj and the aforementioned Lehnhart both earned kills in the run, making an impact in their first collegiate match day. The visitors responded with seven straight points of their own before the Gryphons finished out the set and sealed it with a Georgi Massey kill. The second set saw a slew of new faces take the court for SLC, playing the most competitive set of the day. Ava Castro-Devarona and Eve Iceton both tallied their first kills of the season while Castro-Devarona, Sophie Castaillac and Alex Pantoliano all registered service aces as well. A set full of small scoring runs found itself tied at 22 before an Elms service error gave the Gryphons a one-point lead. Unfortunately, two SLC errors and an Elms kill would follow and the Blazers would even the match at one set apiece.

The third set saw the teams exchange long scoring runs, but the Gryphons would strike last, taking six of the final seven points thanks to kills by Kazos, Massey, Hertig and Lehnhart as it was truly a group effort to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set saw an early Elms run give the visitors an 8-3 lead but the Gryphons would hang around and narrow the gap to trail 19-17 heading into the final stretch of the set. SLC would turn on the jets from that point on, captained by a string of Georgi Massey serves, and take the final eight points of the set to claim their first victory of the season.
