Women's Soccer Opens Season with Convincing 2-0 Victory

WAYNE, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team secured a season-opening shutout victory over William Paterson on Sunday, defeating the Pioneers 2-0. The Gryphons' defense continued their success from the past two seasons, shutting down the WP offense to defeat the Pioneers for the second consecutive year.

Notable Performers
  • Chloe Barker opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute, taking a Katey Beaver pass and converting to give SLC a one-goal lead
  • Junior Hannah Chaffin scored in the 36th minute, putting the ball in the bottom right corner to extend the Gryphons' lead
  • First Year goalkeeper Bella Vaca made her collegiate soccer debut, saving five shots and shutting out the Pioneers

How it Happened

The first half opened with Chaffin pressuring the Paterson defense in the first ten minutes, putting a shot on goal in the ninth minute and forcing Emma Timochko to make her first save of the game. The Pioneers would get two corner kick opportunities in the 14th and 15th minutes, but the SLC defense would hold strong and keep the contest scoreless. Former Skyline Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Conference junior Viktoria Balbin would get a shot off in the 19th minute, but it would be high of the goal and the score would remain 0-0. After subbing in the aforementioned Barker in the 22nd minute, immediately making an impact just four minutes later as a pass from Katey Beaver found its way to Barker and the sophomore gave the Gryphons their first lead of the season.

Vaca would get her first attempt at a save in the 34th minute, converting and keeping the Gryphon ahead by a goal. Two WP shots would be blocked in the 35th minute and the hosts would have another corner kick opportunity shut down by the SLC defense. After an SLC goal kick and a WP throw-in, Chaffin would get another look, this time converting on this opportunity to give the Gryphons a two-goal advantage that would hold into the halftime intermission. The second half would be relatively quiet compared to the first, after SLC's Delaney Julianna put a shot on goal just seconds into the half, only to be saved by William Paterson's Timochko. Beaver got a look on goal of her own in the 50th minute but it would once again be saved by the home team's keeper. Vaca would make one save in the 63rd minute but after that both teams would fail to put another shot on goal for 20 minutes. In the 84th minute it the Pioneers would have two looks at goal in two minutes, forcing Vaca to make two final saves and keep the Gryphons ahead. In the final minute of the contest, Barker would have a chance to add another goal to her season total but a save by Timochko would keep the score at 2-0 through the final whistle.
