Women's Soccer Hosts Vassar for 2024 Home Opener

YONKERS, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team opened their home 2024 slate on Wednesday night by hosting Vassar at Fleming Field. The Gryphons fell 3-0 after a close first half that saw the Brewers lead by just one score.

Notable Performers
  • Bella Vaca made eight saves for SLC in her second career start, allowing three scores
  • Cora Colvin registered three shots, the most by a Gryphon, with one on goal in the second half
  • Katey Beaver racked up two shots and put one on goal as well

How it Happened

The first half started with the Brewers putting pressure on the Sarah Lawrence backline. The visitors registered five shots in the first 11 minutes, forcing Vaca to make a save in the ninth minute to keep the game scoreless. After a corner kick at 21:52, the Brewers got a ball into the box and Cecilia Wagner found Alice Crowley in front of the net to open the scoring and give the visitors a one-goal advantage. Less than a minute after resuming play, Vaca was tested again as Vassar's Diana Loera put a shot on goal but the first-year goalkeeper made the save to keep the deficit at one goal. Another save in the 31st minute by Vaca would be the lone remaining shot-on-goal in the half, as the final 13+ minutes were relatively quiet. SLC's best chances came on a pair of Cora Colvin shots in the 62nd minute, the first went high of the goal and the second was saved by JD Reigrut, keeping the Gryphons off the board. After another Vaca save in the 64th minute, the Brewers would get another look at goal, with Riley McGrath finding London Wilkes for the second score of the game. Wilkes would score again in the 82nd minute, this time taking a pass from Liv Ivie to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Katey Beaver would put a shot on goal in the 87th minute and the Gryphons would get back-to-back corner kicks following the save, but the Vassar defense would keep SLC off the board for the shutout victory.
