Zalis Totals Five Saves, with Multiple Impressive Stops against NJCU

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's soccer team fell to NJCU by a score of 3-0 on Friday night after a scoreless first half that saw the Gryphons lead in shots and possession total. SLC's Jonah Zalis made a handful of spectacular saves in the losing effort, playing a large role in keeping the Gothic Knights off the board in the first half.

Top Performers
  • Zalis totaled five saves for SLC after playing all 90 minutes
  • Connor Saul put a shot on goal from outside the box in the second half for the Gryphons

How it Happened

The first half was a battle in the midfield, as the Gryphons controlled the ball there for over 60% of their possession time while NJCU was at a similar 58% cotrol in the middle of the pitch. The two teams each registered a pair of shots on goal, but saves by both keepers kept the offenses quiet. Zalis was not tested in the first half until the final two minutes, with a pair of saves in the 43rd minute to keep the Gryphons tied in a scoreless affair heading into the intermission. The Gothic Knights scored immediately to open the second half, netting the first score of the day in the 46th minute as Christan Palmer took a Kevin Alves pass to score his first goal of the season and breaking the stalemate. As play resumed, the visitors went on the attack again, forcing Zalis to make a stop before another chance in the 49th minute would prove to be more fruitful. A runner into the box early on a free kick by NJCU led to a Hans Zoller score, giving NJCU a two-goal advantage less than five minutes into the half. The remainder of the half would be reminiscent of the first, as neither team was able to capitalize and the ball was unable to find the back of the net. With under a minute to play, the Gothic Knights got a long ball to Palmer, who beat the SLC defense and scored with six seconds remaining in the game for his second score of the day, securing a 3-0 lead for the visitors.
