BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team opened their 2024 Skyline slate with a home victory over the Maccabees of Yeshiva University. The Gryphons won the match 3-1, taking the first two sets before the visitors claimed a third-set victory. The Gryphons then came back and dominated their opponents for a 25-3 fourth-set victory.

Notable Performers

How it Happened

The Gryphons started the match with confidence, taking control early in the first set. Their aggressive attack, led by standout performances from Nikolet Vataj and Athena Kazos, helped them dominate Yeshiva, who struggled to find their rhythm. Sarah Lawrence's strong offense led to an 18-kill performance in the first set of play and a comfortable 25-14 win to open the match. In the second set, Sarah Lawrence continued to apply pressure on Yeshiva, but the Maccabees showed more resilience, keeping the set closer than the first. Despite Yeshiva's improved defense, the Gryphons maintained their composure and executed their plays efficiently, hitting at a .400 clip. They closed out the set 25-16, thanks to their balanced attack and the support of setter Valerie Hertig, who facilitated the offense with precise ball distribution. The third set saw a shift in momentum as Yeshiva mounted a comeback. The Maccabees tightened their defense and capitalized on errors from Sarah Lawrence. In a highly competitive set, both teams exchanged points, resulting in four tie scores and multiple lead changes. Yeshiva managed to edge out Sarah Lawrence with a 25-22 victory, taking advantage of timely kills and defensive plays to stay alive in the match. However, in the fourth set, Sarah Lawrence regrouped and reasserted their dominance. The Gryphons displayed their most decisive performance of the night, overwhelming Yeshiva with a near-flawless attack. Yeshiva struggled mightily, recording only one kill against nine errors. Sarah Lawrence cruised to a commanding 25-3 win, closing out the match with authority and securing their first Skyline Conference victory of the season
