Men's Soccer Travels to Take on Yeshiva in Skyline Opener

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's soccer team fell to the Yeshiva University Maccabees by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday night in what marked their 2024 Skyline opener. The Gryphons saw an early second-half score even the game but the Maccabees followed the goal up with two of their own.

Notable Performers
  • Asefa Thome scored SLC's lone goal, putting it in on the left side from just inside the box for his first collegiate goal
  • Elijah Shohat played all 90 minutes for SLC, making five saves in the losing effort
  • Connor Saul was the only other Gryphon to register a shot on goal, less than a minute after Thome's score

How it Happened

The first half saw Yeshiva pressing from the beginning, with several early attempts, including a shot from Franco Busso that went wide in the second minute. Sarah Lawrence struggled to create significant chances, with a corner kick in the third minute being their only notable opportunity early on. Yeshiva's persistence paid off in the 42nd minute when Alejandro Saul scored with an assist from David Abittan, giving Yeshiva a 1-0 lead going into halftime. In the second half, Sarah Lawrence came out with more energy, and their efforts were rewarded in the 61st minute when Asefa Thome found the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1. However, Yeshiva quickly responded, regaining the lead in the 68th minute with a goal from Frederico Dorra, assisted by Ivan Zirlinger. Sarah Lawrence tried to push for an equalizer, but Yeshiva's defense held firm. Yeshiva extended their lead in the 76th minute when Josh Ziarno scored, once again assisted by Abittan. Despite some late attempts from Sarah Lawrence, Yeshiva secured the 3-1 victory.
