Women's Volleyball Defeats Pratt in Straight Sets for Fourth Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team earned their fourth consecutive victory on Monday night as they defeated the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute 3-0. The Gryphons used a balanced offensive effort and strong play from both setter Valerie Hertig and libero Kaille Ferguson.

Notable Performers
  • Athena Kazos led the team with 14 kills and added in 16 digs for her fourth double-double of the season
  • Valerie Hertig followed up her record-breaking 48-assist performance on Saturday with a 32-assist effort in three sets
  • Kaille Ferguson led the team with 19 digs and added in four aces
  • Nikolet Vataj totaled 11 kills and added in four digs for the Gryphons

How it Happened

The Gryphons came out strong in the first set, securing a hard-fought 25-23 win. Sarah Lawrence's attackers, led by Kazos and Vataj, consistently pressured Pratt's defense. Despite Pratt putting up a valiant effort and staying close for most of the set, but constant scores by Kazos kept the visitors ahead, especially at critical points. The set saw several lead changes, including the Cannoneers pulling ahead 23-22, but Sarah Lawrence capitalized on a kill from Hertig to tie the set and a pair of late Pratt errors allowed the Gryphons to pull ahead and clinch the opening set. The second set saw Sarah Lawrence maintain their momentum, this time securing a more comfortable 25-18 win. Pratt started strong, but their attack efficiency dropped, with multiple attack errors allowing Sarah Lawrence to regain control and a 12-8 lead. Led by Hertig's setting, the Gryphons sustained their lead, fending off Pratt's attempts to rally. The Gryphons' defensive play also improved, headlined by Ferguson's prowress in the back line, as they forced the Cannoneers into unfavorable positions, closing the set decisively and taking a commanding 2-0 lead. The third and final set was a dominant performance from the Gryphons, as they overwhelmed Pratt with a 25-10 scoreline to seal the match. Sarah Lawrence played technically sound volleyball, with Kazos, Vataj, Georgi Massey and Milly Guemple shining on the offensive end. The team's impressive serving and well-timed blocks left Pratt scrambling to keep up. The Gryphons' defense, led by strong libero play, shut down Pratt's attack, allowing very few clean hits.
