BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's tennis team opened their 2024 season with a home victory against the Albertus Magnus Falcons on Friday night. The team claimed the doubles point by taking victories at second and third doubles and then proceeded to win three singles matchups, with
Caroline He's singles victory clinching the match for the Gryphons.
Sophomores
Neomi Spellman and
Kyra Johnsen suffered a close defeat at first doubles, falling 7-2 in a tiebreaker to the top pair from Albertus.
Zoe Kovac and
Josephine Jackson earned a 6-3 victory at second doubles to help the Gryphons and the aforementioned
Caroline He paired up with
Rebecca Stearns for a 6-4 victory in the third doubles flight to help SLC claim the all-important doubles point to start off the match. This season, the team that wins two or three doubles matchups is granted a single point instead of each matchup being counted as a point in the overall score. The Gryphons then earned victories at the bottom three flights of singles, with Jackson and He being joined by Hiba Riaz as victors. Spellman, Kovac and Johnsen all fell in singles play for the Gryphons in competitive matchups. The closest singles matchup would be that of Riaz, earning a narrow 7-5 victory in the first set before a more dominant 6-1 victory in set two.
