Dougherty Swats Comeback Attempt by Valiants as Men's Basketball Holds on for Road Victory

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team held off a late comeback effort by the Manhattanville Valiants, securing their fifth conference victory of the season as they remain atop the conference standings.

Notable Performances
  • Chris Dougherty continued his strong play with a 15-rebound day. The big man also added six points, five assists and five blocks in a dominant performance.
  • Eamon Kelly led the team in scoring with 19 points, making four three-pointers and pulling down six rebounds
  • Lemar Fulmore Jr. distributed six assists while scoring 12 points for the Gryphons

How it Happened

The Gryphons got going early offensively, jumping ahead to the tune of a 7-0 lead and forcing a Manhattanville timeout with over 14 minutes remaining. The Gryphons would get offensive contributions from everyone early, maintaining a two-possession lead. A six-point run by the hosting Valiants would close the gap to just two points, but the Gryphons would answer with a Fulmore Jr.-to-Braden Burman basket before the junior transfer connected from deep for three points of his own. After triples on two straight Manhattanville possessions, it would be Kelly who stepped up and answered the call, connecting from deep to re-assert a two-possession lead. After another Fulmore Jr. score, the Gryphons would lead 24-16 with under five to play, looking to carry a comfortable lead into the intermission. The Valiants would then score nine straight, claiming a 25-24 advantage with one minute remaining, their first lead of the night. Kelly would once again answer, taking a Dougherty pass and giving SLC another lead, but a one-for-two trip to the line for Manhattanville's Jack Scanlon would send the teams into the break tied at 26 points apiece.

Manhattanville's Andrew Saint-Louis opened the second half with a triple, giving the Valiants the lead and foreshadowing a close game to come. After 2+ minutes of scoreless basketball, the Gryphons got an answer from Dean Furlong, scoring to cut the lead to just one before Kelly once again stepped up for the visitors and gave the Gryphons the lead back. The teams would find themselves going back-and-forth until another Kelly triple broke a stalemate and gave SLC a three-point advantage. Saint-Louis would take his turn answering for the Valiants, striking from distance to tie the game once again. After SLC built up a one-point lead, Saint Louis would connect twice more in the next three Manhattanville possessions, giving the team a one-point advantage with 11 minutes remaining. SLC first year Thomas Matonti would step up in a big spot on the ensuing possession, taking a pass from Burman and striking from long range, returning the lead to the Gryphons. Burman would then score on the ensuing possession before a pair of Matonti free-throws gave the pair seven straight points. The Valiants would then embark on a scoring run, tying the game at 58 points with four minutes remaining and threatening to give the Gryphons their first conference loss of the season. The typical faces would step up down the final stretch, with Andrew Kim breaking the tie with a layup before Burman scored on the ensuing SLC possession to give the Gryphons a four-point lead. After a huge block by Dougherty, one of his five on the day, Kelly made it to the line for three attempts, knocking down the trio to give SLC a seven-point advantage with two minutes to play. The Valiants would score six straight points to bring the lead down to one point with 13 seconds left, but Dougherty and Kim would both go 2-for-2 from the line down the stretch to send the Gryphons back to Bronxville with the win.
