Men's Volleyball Caps Opening Weekend with Victory over Dean College

MILTON, MASS. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team split their opening weekend tri-match, falling to the hosting Curry College Colonels before defeating the Bulldogs of Dean College in straight sets to wrap up the weekend.

Notable Performers
  • Setter Alex Xie totaled 66 assists in the two matches, adding in double-digit digs as well
  • Nate Davis put up 11 kills in each match to go along with a total of 13 digs and a trio of aces
  • First-year hitter Lucas Buckley totaled 20 kills, eight aces and 11 digs in the pair of matches

How it Happened

Davis led the charge offensively in match one, contributing 11 kills with an impressive .333 hitting percentage. He was supported mainly by Buckley, who recorded 12 kills at a .435 clip, while also providing a strong presence at the net with two blocks. Xie kept the Gryphon offense organized, tallying 24 assists and adding three digs. Defensively, libero Sam Saldarelli anchored the back row with consistent serve receptions and added six digs. Aidan Roney and Nathan Dreger chipped in with seven and ten points, respectively, combining for solid offensive and defensive contributions. Despite being unable to claim a set, the Gryphons demonstrated resilience and flashed potential of what is yet to come this season.

In their second match of the day, the Gryphons bounced back with a commanding 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) over Dean College, marking their first win of the season. Davis once again showcased his dominance, leading all scorers with 14 kills at a stellar .304 hitting percentage. Buckley was a force both offensively and defensively, contributing 16 kills and racking up six service aces. Roney had a standout performance as well, registering a .375 hitting percentage with eight kills and four digs. Xie directed the Gryphons' offense with precision, accumulating 30 assists while also recording 13 digs. The defensive effort was bolstered by the aforementioned Saldarelli, who kept the back line steady with four digs, and Chase Bolden, who added critical defensive stops. The team's strong serving game proved pivotal in the victory, with the team combining for 13 service aces.

The Gryphons (1-2) will host the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute for their 2025 home opener on Thursday, January 23rd. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville.
