First Years Excel as Men's Volleyball Wins Home Opener against Pratt

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team took down Pratt in straight sets on Thursday night, opening their 2025 home slate with a victory in front of a crowd at the Campbell Sports Center. The Gryphons won a closely contested first set by a score of 25-23 before taking down the Cannoneers 25-9 anf 25-14 to wrap up the match.

Notable Performers
  • First Year Lucas Buckley totaled nine kills and added in three aces while hitting .375 on the night
  • Senior Nate Davis tied Buckley with nine kills of his own, adding on seven digs in the win
  • Setter Alex Xie earned his 100th assist just four matches into his SLC career, ending the match with 24 assists, a pair of kills and a block

How it Happened

Buckley and Davis got going early for the Gryphons, racking up five combined kills to take a 7-5 advantage. Buckley then earned his first ace of the match to extend the lead, giving the hosts a three-point advantage. The Cannoneers would fight back, taking seven of the next eight points and claiming a three-point lead of their own just minutes later. A Pratt error would stop the bleeding and a first-year connection between Xie and Nathan Dreger would reduce the lead to just one. An error would stop SLC's momentum, but Xie and Dreger would once again connect, kicking off a three-point run that would return the lead to the Gryphons. The Cannoneers would take their turn making a small run, claiming the next three points, but Buckley would keep the team close with a pair of kills and eventualy another service ace to tie the set at 18 points apiece. After a Pratt kill, Davis and Aidan Roney combined for a block that swung the momentum in favor of the Gryphons once again. Davis and Dreger earned additional kills in the final minutes of the set and a trio of Pratt errors helped give the Gryphons a one-set lead.

The second set was dominated by the Gryphons, as Buckley earned another kill early before a double block by Davis and Dreger gave SLC a 7-4 lead. Xie helped the Gryphons extend their lead, earning a kill of his own before teaming up with Dreger for a block. Ralph Calle-Schulz and Roney joined in on the fun, earning kills of their own as they helped the team cruise to a 25-9 victory. The Gryphons used an early serving string by senior Nick Fajardo to get ahead 10-2. Later, Dreger would set his setter, Xie, before they reversed roles two rallies later. The Canadian middle blocker then ripped off two consecutive aces, putting SLC up 16-6. An Aidan Roney solo block would give the team an 18-9 advantage and a kill by the junior would put them up 21-12. Fajardo would once again excel from the service area, acing the Cannoneers for SLC's 22nd point before another Xie-to-Dreger connection sealed the match victory for the Gryphons.
