Second Half Outburst Propels Men's Basketball over Bears for Seventh Skyline Win

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team continued their winning ways, using a 38-point second half to take down the Bears of St. Joseph's Brooklyn at the Campbell Sports Center.

Notable Performers
  • Lemar Fulmore Jr. led all Gryphons in scoring, putting in 21 points and adding in seven assists
  • Chris Dougherty continued his strong play with another double-double, adding in a trio of blocks as well
  • Thomas Matonti poured in four shots from long range, totaling 12 points and a pair of steals in the win

How it Happened

Dougherty opened the game with a triple, but it would be the Bears that got ahead early on. The visitors held a brief lead, for the first few minutes, but an Aiden Morel jumper would give the Gryphons a 9-8 advantage. Fulmore Jr. would connect on the first of his three triples just a couple of minutes later, but an immediate response would tie the game up at 12 points apiece. An 8-0 run for the Gryphons would follow, as Fulmore Jr. and Matonti would each connect from deep and Fulmore Jr. would go coast-to-coast following a block by Dougherty. After a lone SJBK free throw halted the run, Fulmore Jr. would step into another one from deep, keeping momentum on the side of the hosts. The Bears would the following 11 points, capitalizing on SLC's early fouling woes by getting to the line four times and eventually claiming a 24-23 advantage with under five minutes in the half. Matonti would take his turn from long range, connecting for the second time and stopping the bleeding momentarily. The next possession would see a response by the Bears, hitting a triple of their own to grab the lead back from the Gryphons. Fulmore Jr. would once again step up for SLC, taking a Dean Furlong pass and scoring inside to return the lead to the Gryphons. Furlong would then take his turn scoring in the paint, connecting on an unassisted jumper to extend the lead. Two more free throws by the Bears would cut the lead to one, but a Dougherty score with just over a minute remaining would send the Gryphons into the intermission with a three-point lead.

The second half was a completely different story, as the Gryphons dominated. A dunk by Dougherty after a Braden Burman assist electrified the Campbell Sports Center four minutes into the half. The Bears would once again use the free throw line to their advantage, but triples from Furlong and Matonti, as well as scores by Fulmore Jr. and Burman, would put the Gryphons up by double digits for the final seven minutes and change.

Up Next
