Stephens Shines Again for Women's Basketball against Hawks

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to Hunter College on Monday night as they hosted the CUNYAC-leading Hawks in a rescheduled non-conference matchup. Hunter's Alexa Charles, the nation's second-leading scorer, posted 35 points to move the Hawks to 13-4 overall on the season.

Notable Performers
  • First Year Kendall Stephens put up her second consecutive double-digit scoring performance, leading the team with 15 points and adding seven rebounds
  • Kaila Dorch pulled down eight rebounds for SLC while blocking three shots and swiping another for four total takeaways
  • Madeline Moor impacted the game on the defensive side of the ball, pulling down three defensive rebounds and grabbing three steals in just 10 minutes of play

How it Happened

Stephens got to work early for the Gryphons, as Dorch found the first year for a layup to open the scoring for the Gryphons. The Alabama product would continue to contribute, next going to work on the glass, grabbing her own miss just minutes later and laying the ball in for another SLC score. After a pair of Ariana Spanopoulos free throws with just under three minutes left in the first quarter, the Gryphons crashed the defensive glass to limit the Hawks to just two more scores. Junior Grace Carter joined her classmate, Spanopoulos, by rebounding Hunter misses and Dorch came away with a steal with just over a minute to go that halted the visitors' momentum, but offensive struggles would keep the hosts trailing by ten after the first quarter of play.

The second quarter saw a burst of scoring from first-year guard Audrey Mattison, who scored five points within 30 seconds, taking a pair of passes from Dorch and converting from both the paint and long range to bring the Gryphons within striking distance. Emrie Pedraza would take the ball away on the next Hunter possession, giving the Gryphons a chance to further reduce the lead. After a block by the Hawks, Mattison would find Pedraza for a layup on an inbounds set to bring the team within four points. The visitors would answer less than a minute later, as Katie Burke connected from deep to extend the lead. The Gryphons would answer themselves, with Stephens getting to the line on two straight possessions and knocking down all four shots to keep the score close. A long scoring run by the Hawks would answer, building up a comfortable lead despite two more Stephens free throws.

The second half saw the Gryphons capitalize on opportunities, with a Spanopoulos-to-Mattison connection in the fastbreak following a rebound by Dorch and a three-point play by the center as well. Spanopoulos joined in on the scoring with a triple and Stephens added to her 11 first-half points with another jumper, but the Hawks maintained their lead heading into the final ten minutes. Stephens and Spanopoulos stepped up at the line in the final quarter of play, but the Gryphons would struggle to create opportunities in the half court. Moor would inject some energy into the lineup in the final stretch of play, crashing the defensive glass and forcing multiple Hunter turnovers. Junior Perry Yun would wrap up the offensive showing for the Gryphons, banking in a jump shot with 20 seconds remaining.
