1.29.25

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's swim team took to the Purchase College Pool this past weekend for the two-day Skyline Championships. The Gryphons set 27 season-bests and scored in 24 of their 37 total individual swims, helping the team to an 89-point improvement over last year. The Gryphons also podiumed in each of the four relay events throughout the weekend, helping them earn a third-place finish overall, another improvement over their 2024 result.

As far as individual performances go, junior Ella Hernan led the way. Hernan finished top-five in all four of her events, including a trio of second-place finishes that earned her second-team all-conference in the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. Hernan rounded out her meet as part of SLC's 400 freestyle relay team that secured the group's top-three finish, swimming the third leg as the Gryphons defeated St. Joseph's Long Island and Purchase to wrap up the weekend. The junior also finished 5th in the 50 freestyle to warp up an all-around impressive meet.

Sarah Lawrence's outstanding first years continued to contribute in the biggest meet of the season thus far, with Kirsten Eads securing a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke events while adding in two more impressive solo swims in the 200 and 400 IM, finishing sixth and fourth respectively. Fellow first year Amelie Burg also had an impressive meet, swimming in all four relays for SLC, helping the Gryphons to continue their strong string of relay performances and earning meaningful points for the team. Burg also brought home a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle, finishing right behind Hernan. She followed her junior teammate once again a few events later, earning an impressive third-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a nearly five-second gap between her and the fourth-place finisher. The first year rounded out her individual performances with another top-six finish, this time in the 100 freestyle, leading a trio of Gryphons. Ava Greengrass had a solid meet as well for SLC, starting off with a seventh-place swim in the 500 freestyle before touching the wall seventh later in the meet in the 200 freestyle. She then rounded out the performance with a tenth-place finish in the 100 freestyle, giving the first year three top-ten finishes on the weekend.

One of the Gryphons to follow Burg in that 100 freestyle race was senior captain Josie Laur, who alongside fellow captain McKenzie Shaffer-Kay, scored in all of their individual swims. Laur helped SLC in all four relays as well, while placing fourth in the 50 freestyle, less than a second ahead of both Hernan and Burg, before a pair of seventh-place swims in the 100 backstroke and freestyle events. Shaffer-Kay finished one spot behind her fellow captain in the 100 backstroke while also touching the wall sixth in the 100 butterfly and tenth in the 200 IM. The team's third and final senior, Eva Guarda-Vazquez, had an impressive meet as well, contributing to both the 200 and 400 medley relays as well as the 400 freestyle relay, all while adding in an eighth-place swim in the 100 freestyle and a ninth-place performance in the 200 breaststroke.
