Women's Swimming Sweeps Gryphons Sprint Carnival for Fourth Straight Season

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's swim team dominated in Saturday's season-opening meet, defeating William Paterson and St. Joseph's Long Island in a home tri-meet. The Gryphons beat William Paterson 132-86 before earning a Skyline victory against the Golden Eagles by a score of 147-72. The team is now 12-0 in their annual Gryphons Sprint Carnival, dating back to 2022.

Relay Performances
The team started the meet off with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as Kirsten Eads, Cordelia Bay, Keilani Talma and Amelie Burg paced the field with a time of 2:03.95. The second SLC relay team of Jordyn Carela, Aubrey Rosser, Hannah Drum and Krista Burgess touched the wall with a time of 2:16.90. The meet then wrapped up with the 200-yard freestyle relay, with another SLC group earning the win to end the day just as it had started. This time, it would be Ella Hernan, Cordelia Bay, Hannah Drum and Krista Burgess to bring home the first-place finish, touching the wall in a time of 1:52.89, over two seconds quicker than the second-place team. Juliet DeLap, Olivia Huie, Jocelyn Engel and Alessandra Abemayor made up the team's second relay squad in the same event, finishing with a time of 2:23.16.

Individual Events
The team's first individual win of the year came from Eads, whose performance in the 50-yard backstroke paced a field of eight swimmers. The sophomore finished the event with a time of 31.23, while teammates Burg, Burgess and Carela finished in fifth through seventh, respectively. Talma followed up with a win of her own a few events later, finishing the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.67 to pace the field. Eads finished third in the same event, touching the wall with a time of 1:14.61 to add to her earlier victory. Talma returned to the pool for the 100-yard freestyle and emerged with another win, pacing the field with a time of 59.18 that was nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Rosser also competed in the event with a fourth-place finish and a time of 1:05.30. Talma, the senior from Barbados, completed the hat trick with her third win of the day in the 50-yard butterfly, leading the field with a time of 29.36, nearly two seconds faster than the next finisher. Drum and Burg finished in third and fifth, respectively, with sub-32-second swims.

In the other individual swims, a group of Gryphons took to the pool for the 200-yard freestyle, as Hernan and Huie both put up top-three finishes, with Hernan's time of 2:10.54 earning her second place and just .22 seconds behind the event's winner from William Paterson. Huie followed right behind Hernan with a time of 2:37.73 and Engel secured a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:45.02. In the 50-yard breaststroke, the Gryphons got top finishes from Drum and Rosser, with the former coming in third place with a time of 38.91 and the latter finishing in fourth place, just over a second behind, with a time of 40.21. The 50-yard freestyle would feature a trio of Gryphons in top spots, as Hernan, Berg and Burgess finished second, third and fourth. All three swimmers touched the wall in under 29 seconds, as Hernan led the way with a time of 28.31, followed by Burg's 28.48 and Burgess's 28.74. Hernan continued a strong day in the pool with a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall with a time of 1:07.66. Bay would be the next Gryphon to take the pool, heading into the 100-yard breaststroke and finishing in second place overall and first amongst Skyline swimmers. The first year completed the event in 1:24.16, over eight seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. Another trio of Gryphons finished in order in the 100-yard Individual Medley, with Eads, Bay and Rosser finishing in fourth, fifth and sixth place. Eads led the way with a time of 1:12.37 while Bay and Rosser both posted sub-1:18.00 times to wrap up the individual events.

The Gryphons (2-0, Skyline 1-0) will return to the Campbell Sports Center Pool on Saturday, October 25th as they host Skyline opponents Maritime and Merchant Marine alongside Bard College for a home quad meet. The first event is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Bronxville as the team looks to build off a strong first meet.
