Women's Volleyball Punctuates 2025 Season with Skyline Semifinal Appearance

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team wrapped up another successful season on Thursday night despite falling to the top-seeded Manhattanville Valiants in three sets. The Gryphons faced off against the Valiants in the Skyline Semifinal for the second straight year as Manhattanville looks to win its fourth consecutive Skyline Conference Championship.

Notable Performers
  • Athena Kazos punctuated her historic SLC career with eight kills and 11 digs
  • Sophia Costa posted a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs
  • Nikolet Vataj totaled 11 digs, adding in five kills and the team's lone ace

How it Happened

Manhattanville controlled the opening set, building an early 5-1 lead behind strong swings from a pair of all-conference hitters. Sarah Lawrence clawed back with kills from Vataj and Iceton, as well as a block from Richard, and later used a serving run from Vataj to cut a six-point deficit down to 16-15. The Gryphons forced multiple Manhattanville errors during that surge, but the Valiants responded with a final push led by their hitters, who combined for six kills in the closing stretch to take the set 25-20.

The second frame followed a similar script, with Manhattanville jumping ahead on an early service run from Kayla Jennings and a series of kills by Caylin Caballero and company. Sarah Lawrence stayed within reach thanks to attacks from Vataj and Kazos, plus key defensive blocks from Kelly, Richard and Iceton that trimmed the deficit to 12-9. Despite late points from Kazos and Costa, the Valiants pulled away again, with Skyline Player of the Year Loren Hernandez securing the set with a kill to give Manhattanville a 25-18 victory.

In the third, Manhattanville's serving pressure set the tone while a pair of blocks by Cassidy Fallon allowed the Valiants to build a 9-3 advantage. The Gryphons battled throughout, getting kills from Costa, Kazos, Iceton, and Richard while three of the four registered blocks as well. Despite the successes, Caballero and Hernandez continued to score at a high rate for the hosts, and another late serving run widened the gap. Iceton and Richard added late points, but the Valiants closed out the match 25-15, ending the semifinal in straight sets.
