Women's Volleyball Battles Top-Ranked Valiants in Four-Set Match Featuring Marathon Rallies

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence Women's Volleyball Team and the Manhattanville Valiants battled throughout four hard-fought sets before the visiting Valiants emerged with a 3-1 victory. The contest was a rematch of last season's Skyline Semifinal where the Gryphons also took a set off the Valiants, who haven't lost a regular-season conference contest since October of 2022.

Notable Performers
How it Happened

The first set saw a brief 10-6 lead for the visitors at the onset, with five early Caylin Caballero kills leading the way. The Gryphons remained on the heels of the Valiants throughout, with kills by Vataj and Kazos leading the way while four first-set blocks kept the Skyline-leading Valiants in check. Despite bring only three-to-four points down for the majority of the set, the visitors took three of the last four points to secure a 25-20 first-set victory.

The Gryphons came out in the second set with a 6-3 lead, using kills from both Kazos and Olivia Richard to jump out to an advantage. After an SLC service error, the Valiants took seven straight points via Samantha Andriola aces. The SLC error, seven aces and a pair of Manhattanville kills gave the visitors a 10-0 run that gave them a 13-6 lead in a set that could threaten a sweep. Vataj, Kazos and Eve Iceton registered kills, but the early advantage thanks to the ten-point swing would prove too much as the Valiants took a commanding 25-15 second-set victory and threatened a straight-set sweep.

The third set was redemption for the Gryphons, with a variety of contributors helping the team extend the match. Brynn Beck started off the set with a kill before an Iceton ace, Carolyn Kelly ace and Costa/Richard block gave the team a 7-3 advantage. Beck, Vataj, Kelly and Kazos all registered kills throughout the middle of the set, eventually bringing the Gryphons to a 16-9 advantage. An answer by the Valiants would stall SLC momentarily, but a 5-0 SLC run capped off by a Kazos kill and a Richard/Kazos block would give the hosts a 21-10 advantage. Four straight points would go to the visitors before another block by the aforementioned duo stopped the bleeding, but Manhattanville would continue to bridge the gap, reducing the SLC lead to 24-21 before another Vataj kill sealed the set victory and extended the match.

A 5-1 Manhattanville lead early in the fourth set returned momentum to the visitors, but the Gryphons brought the set back to 5-4 as an Eva Anderson ace and a Kazos kill bridged the gap. The two teams battled back and forth, with the visitors leading by a narrow margin before a Beck/Kelly block ties the set at 13. A 4-1 run by the Valiants returned the lead to their favorite before a copycat response by the Gryphons tied the set up once again, this time at 17-17. The teams tied at 19-19 and 20-20 as well before a kill by Beck gave the Gryphons a brief advantage. The visitors would not be denied for a second straight set, taking the next four points to reach match point, but a Manhattanville error and an ace from Vataj would only bring the hosts back within one before a double block would seal the victory for the Valiants.
