Men's Basketball Uses +31 Rebound Margin to Start Skyline Play with Road Victory

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team started Skyline play with a road victory against the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent. The Gryphons outrebounded the hosts 60-29 en route to a ten-point victory, heading into the winter break with a 56-46 win.

Notable Performers
  • Braden Burman led the team with 13 points, adding 10 rebounds for a double-double
  • Chris Dougherty added a game-high 16 rebounds along with 12 points
  • Andrew Kim was the third Gryphon in double figures with 12 points in the win
How it Happened

The two teams went back-and-forth early as scoring was scarce, but a triple from Alex Chi and a Joel Gado layup gave the hosts a 7-4 lead. The Gryphons answered with back-to-back long-range connections from Thomas Matonti and Aiden Morel, propelling the visitors into the lead. A second-chance score from John Kairouz gave SLC a two-possession lead and capped an 8-0 run as the midway point of the half approached. Burman, Dougherty and Kim went to work midway through the set, with a triple by Kim pushing the SLC lead to nine points with under eight to play in the half. The Dolphins answered to stop the run but a three pointer by Burman answered immediately, extending the lead to double-digits. After seven straight UMSV points, the lead was reduced to just a single possession, but Dougherty found Kim for a score after an SLC timeout, stopping the bleeding and giving the Gryphons a two-possession lead once again. Back-to-back triples by the Dolphins gave them their first lead in over 12 minutes of game time, with just over a minute to play in the first half. Morel struck again for SLC, taking a pass from Kim and putting the visitors back on top as they headed into the intermission.

Dougherty got going offensively in the second half, scoring the team's first four points and kick starting a seven-point run that put the Gryphons ahead by eight points and forced a UMSV timeout. The Dolphins came out of the timeout and scored on consecutive possessions, once again closing the gap to a single possession. Gabe Downes and Kyle Jefferson started a 7-0 SLC run that extended the lead to double-digits once again, this time with under 15 minutes to play. Once again, the hosts would close the gap, with Eric Woodbury knocking down three free throws with under 10 to play and bringing the lead down to five. Burman, Dougherty, Kim, Elias Flaim and Dean Furlong all scored throughout the remainder of the contest to keep the Gryphons ahead, including late free throws from Kim, Furlong and Burman to secure the victory.
