Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball hosts Regis for Valentine's Day Matchup

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team welcome Regis College to the Campbell Sports Center on Friday night for a non-conference matchup. The Gryphons fell to the Pride after coming into the game with a five-match win streak. The team had won each of the five matches in straight sets for a total of 15 won sets in a row.

Notable Performers
  • Nate Davis once again led the team offensively, tallying 14 kills while adding in six digs and 1.5 blocks
  • Alex Xie contributed 14 assists and two block assists in the final set

How it Happened

The Pride dominated the first set, getting ahead early despite a Ralph Calle-Schulz ace and kills from both Davis and Xie. Nathan Dreger joined Davis for a block to keep the Gryphons close, one of the first-year middle blocker's five of the night, but the Pride would take 15 of the final 19 points, including six of the last seven to close out a 25-12 first-set victory. The second set was a different story, as the two teams remained close for the duration of the set. A solo block by Davis would give SLC a brief 1-0 advantage and the team would capitalize on Regis errors to remaining neck-and-neck with the visitors. Back-to-back double blocks by Lucas Buckley and Dreger would tie the set at 14 as the Gryphons threatened to tie the match at one set apiece. The teams would trade points for the following nine rallies, before two serve-receieve errors by SLC bookended a 3-0 run that gave the Pride a 21-18 advantage. Xie would find both Davis and Buckley for kills down the stretch, but the visitors would maintain their lead and take a 25-21 victory, improving their match lead to 2-0. The third and final set looked to be a runaway win for the Pride, taking an 8-1 lead early on. A Regis error and a kill by Davis got the Gryphons back on track, as each team scored twice to bring the tally to 10-3. A 4-0 run by the hosts would ensue, with a pair of aces from Buckley leading the way and closing the gap to just three points. The Pride would answer with a kill, but a Calle-Schulz score and a trio of kills by Davis kept the Gryphons close, looking to extend the match to a fourth set. The visitors would once again separate themselves, taking a 19-14 advantage before a five-rally run by the Gryphons that featured the aforementioned pair of block assists by Xie. The first year teammed up with his classmate Dreger for both blocks and helped to tie the set at 19 points apiece. The visitors responded with a run of their own, taking the next four points on a trio of SLC errors and an ace before securing the set a few rallies later with a Brandon Valdes kill.
