First-Half Scoring Surge Propels Men's Basketball past Dolphins

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team used a dominant first half to defeat the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent by a score of 86-71 on Wednesday night. The Gryphons scored 54 first-half points, including 15 from Thomas Matonti, to earn another Skyline victory in the final week of the regular season.

Notable Performers
  • Matonti led all scorers with 15 points, knocking down five triples in the first half
  • Gavin Wright scored a career-best 10 points, adding in three rebounds and a pair of assists
  • Noah Elovitz-Fields pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in addition to scoring eight points
  • Luca Mesiti scored seven points in eight minutes off the bench, converting on three of his four field goals

How it Happened

The Dolphins struck first with a lone made free-throw, but it would be all Gryphons from that point forward. Junior Eamon Kelly made his return to the court, opening the team's scoring with a three-pointer three minutes into the game. Kelly would also score on the ensuing SLC possession, grabbing an offensive board before converting on a jumper to give his team a 5-1 lead. The next SLC possession would see another long-range connection from the Gryphons, as Andrew Kim grabbed an offensive board before scoring from deep to further extend the team's advantage. A score by UMSV would halt the run, but the Gryphons would prove to be relentless, especially from deep. Aiden Morel and Thomas Matonti would continue their strong shooting from Sunday's win over Yeshiva as both connected on triples to extend the lead to nine points. The Dolphins would answer once again, but the sharpshooting duo would strike again, this time bookended a Dean Furlong layup as the team's lead grew to 15 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. The duo of Matonti and Morel would continue to strike, combining for eight triples in the first 20 minutes of play as they helped the team carry a 24-point advantage into the halftime intermission.

The second half would display SLC's depth, as usual contributors like Lemar Fulmore Jr. and Chris Dougherty contributed buckets and were joined by Elovitz-Fields, John Kairouz and Wright, who scored all 10 points in the second half. Mesiti joined Wright as late-game standouts, as the pair scored SLC's final 17 points of the contest, helped the Gryphons secure another Skyline victory, extending the program's single-season overall and conference win records.
