Fulmore Jr.'s 22-Point Effort Sends Men's Basketball to the Skyline Semifinals

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team overcame an eight-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins 44-25 in the second half to advance to the Skyline semifinals for the second consecutive season. The Gryphons will host the Maccabees of Yeshiva University on Thursday, February 27th at 7:00 p.m.

Notable Performers
  • Lemar Fulmore Jr. led all scorers with 22 points, knocking down all seven of his shots from the field while getting to the free-throw line 10 times
  • Braden Burman connected on 66.7% of his shots from the field, finishing the game with 15 points and four rebounds
  • Andrew Kim totaled 11 points while distributing eight assists and swiping a pair of steals

How it Happened

The Gryphons started out the game hot, with Burman opening the scoring before teammate Chris Dougherty got in on the action. Burman and all-conference junior Eamon Kelly both added early triples to extend SLC's lead to 10-4. UMSV's Kevin Agyemang added a pair of triples in response to tie the score and started what would be a back-and-forth affair for the majority of the first half. The two teams would tie at 12, 15, 17 and 19 points apiece before the Dolphins began to heat up. Luckily, John Kairouz subbed in for SLC and made an immediate impact. Kairouz scored eight points in two minutes for the Gryphons, but a response each time by the visitors kept the lead narrowly in the hands of the Dolphins. Two more scores by Agyemang in the final two minutes, including one right before the buzzer, sent the Gryphons into the break trailing by eight after their early lead.

The second half continued the back-and-forth affair before a 6-0 run by the Dolphins gave them a double-digit lead with 12:58 to play. Fulmore Jr. and Burman stepped up for SLC, cutting into the UMSV lead possession-by-possession, but it would be a Dougherty triple right after the nine-minute mark that got the Campbell Sports Center buzzing and brought the Gryphons within four. After a Mount Saint Vincent timeout, the visitors responded, but the momentum was with the Gryphons as Fulmore Jr. once again stepped in to keep his team in the game. Much like the minute prior, Dougherty would get a huge bucket, putting back a miss from deep to bring SLC within two points of the lead with seven-and-a-half left to play. A pair of Burman free throws tied the game up before the teams traded scores, with another bucket by Agyemang giving UMSV a one-point lead with five minutes remaining. This time, a 10-0 run by the Gryphons would break the game wide open. Burman started the run, but it would be back-to-back triples by Kim and Fulmore Jr. that put SLC up nine with three minutes to play, bringing the energy and noise in the building to it's climax. UMSV's Josiah Basket would score the game's next four points to reduce the lead, but a layup by Burman and six late made free throws by the Gryphons helped seal the victory and bring a Skyline Semifinal to Bronxville on Thursday.
