Men's Volleyball Sets Single-Season Win Record with 3-1 Comeback against UMSV

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team earned their ninth win of the season on Wednesday night, setting the program's single-season wins record after a 3-1 victory over the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent.

Notable Performers
  • Nathan Dreger racked up nine kills, hitting .615 to go along with three aces
  • Nate Davis led the team with 11 kills, adding in six digs
  • Alex Xie totaled 30 assists, five aces and five digs in the win

How it Happened

The first set was a true back-and-forth affair, with no more than four points separating the teams at all times. The Dolphins struck first, taking the first three points and a 7-4 lead, but a Dreger/Xie block and an ace by Davis would fuel a four-point run to give SLC a lead. After trading scores, five straight SLC errors gave the Dolphins a four-point advantage, only to be answered by another four-point swing for the Gryphons. After another small push by UMSV, the Gryphons took four more in a row for an 18-17 lead. An errant serve by SLC and a pair of kills by the Dolphins returned the lead to the visitors, giving them a 20-18 lead. Kills by Davis, Dreger and Roney would keep the Gryphons in the set, tying it up at 22 before the Dolphins took three of the final four points to take an early lead in the match.

The Gryphons came out firing on all cylinders in the second set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead thanks to a trio of Xie aces and a kill by Dreger. After stopping the bleeding momentarily, the Gryphons then took five more points to move the score to 13-4. The Gryphons maintained a comfortable lead, getting to match point at 24-15 and on track to even up the match. The Dolphins would surge for five straight points, but a kill from Lucas Buckley would secure the 25-20 victory for the Gryphons, evening up the match at one set apiece. The third set would be another back-and-forth affair, with a nine-nine tie midway through the set. An ace by Jackson Perhaes broke the tie and kills by Dreger, Buckley and Ralph Calle-Schulz would help the Gryphons stay ahead of the visitors. Back-to-back aces by Dreger put SLC up 18-12 and the first year would wrap up the set with a kill to put SLC up 2-1 heading into a fourth set.

The fourth and final set would go similarly to the second, with an early 9-2 advantage for the Gryphons thanks to kills and blocks from Buckley, Davis and Dreger. The trio would continue to help the Gryphons stay in control, with a kill from Roney sprinkled in to put SLC up comfortably. Buckley and Davis would earn the final two kills of the match, sealing the team's record-setting victory and continuing SLC's strong 2025 campaign.
