Dreger and Xie help Men's Volleyball Earn Program-Best 8th Win of the Season

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball team split Saturday's road tri-match, falling to the hosting Valiants in four sets before taking down the Bears of St. Joseph's Brooklyn in straight sets to wrap up the day. The team will now take a week off in line with Sarah Lawrence's spring break before hosting a tri-match of their own on Saturday, March 15th featuring Purchase College and St. Joseph's Long Island.

Notable Performers
  • Nate Davis finished the day with 25 kills and 19 digs, adding in 3.0 total blocks
  • Nathan Dreger totaled 13 kills, three aces and 3.0 blocks of his own
  • Alex Xie put up 57 assists in the two matches, bringing his season total to 397

Match 1: MVL def. SLC 3-1

The Valiants started the match of strong, withholding kills from a variety of Gryphons to secure a first-set victory. Aidan Roney and Ralph Calle-Schulz joined the aforementioned trio by earning kills, but Manhattanville wrapped up the set with a 25-18 victory. The second set was the definition of a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to pull away before Davis, Lucas Buckley and the Gryphons eventually came away with a 25-23 victory. The third and fourth sets would go to the Valiants, with early runs in each set helping the hosts take a pair of 25-13 victories to seal the match victory.

Match 2: SLC def. SJBK 3-0

The match started out very similar to Monday night's five-set marathon between the two teams, but the Gryphons would take seven straight points in the middle of the set to put the team ahead. Dreger started the run out with a kill before stepping up to the line for a string of serves, including an ace, to help build the lead. The team capped the run with a Buckley/Roney block that gave them a 20-13 lead. A kill by Ralph Calle-Schulz gave the Gryphons set point before an SJBK error sealed the first-set victory. The second set would go to SLC as well, with a late-set surge that included the Gryphons taking five of the final six points to seal the win. Davis stepped up to wrap up the second set, a trio of kills in the aforementioned final stretch of play to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set saw the Gryphons remain firmly in control throughout, with a pair of seniors wrapping up the match as Calle-Schulz and Davis each earned a kill to give the Gryphons their eighth victory of the season, tying the program's single-season record.
