Softball Opens Skyline Play with Pair of Wins over Maccabees

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team took down Yeshiva in both ends of Sunday's double double, thanks to a pair of complete games from Shirin Pechefsky and 25 total runs scored by the Gryphons. Kyra Johnsen led the offensive effort with six hits, both driving in and scoring three runs while reaching base three times in each game.

Notable Performers
  • Pechefsky tossed 10 total innings for SLC, earning a pair of wins while striking out 12 and walking just three batters
  • Johnsen's six hits included a double in game two and five singles
  • Isabella Boissonnault totaled three hits, scoring four runs and swiping two bases

How it Happened

Pechefsky helped the Gryphons out before even stepping on the mound, singling in the top of the first and driving in Johnsen to give the visitors a one-run lead. The SLC offense would get going even more in the second frame, with back-to-back singles by Kendall Stephens and Sophie Grenke leading the way before Boissonnault and Isabella Zuniga earned RBIs to help extend the lead to 6-0. Johnsen reached base for the second time in the third, driving in Grenke to put another run on the board for the Gryphons. The team then upped the score in the fourth by adding on three more runs, with a two-RBI singles by Zuniga before the junior scored herself on a Yeshiva error after Kate Hansberry put the ball in play. Pechefsky retired the Maccabees in order in the bottom of the fourth before getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth to secure the shutout victory.

In game two, the Gryphons once ahead got ahead before Pechefsky could step on the rubber, with Boissonnault driving in Johnsen via a sacrifice fly and Hansberry plating a pair on a single to center field. The Maccabees broke their scoreless drought in the bottom half of the first with a bases-loaded walk bringing around their first score of the game. A groundout back to Pechefsky got the junior out of the inning and stranded three runners, keeping SLC ahead 3-1. After going down in order to start the inning, the Gryphons managed to keep the Maccabees off the board as well, with a strikeout and another groundout to Pechefsky getting the team out of the inning. Boissonnault would get things started in the third for SLC, with a one-out double to stay hot. Malia Rode's third hit of the day drove in SLC's catcher before Rode scored on a wild pitch two batters later. Hansberry singled again to drive in her third run of the game, driving in Zuniga who had singled to move over Rode moments earlier. The Maccabees would get out of the inning, heading into the bottom of the third with a 1-6 deficit. The Gryphons then tagged on three more runs in the fourth, with a pair scoring on a YU error and Pechefsky herself scoring on a Rode double to right field. Back-to-back base hits by the Maccabees plated a run by the hosts, bringing the score to 9-2 in favor of the Gryphons. Emily Leonard drove in Stephens in the top of the fifth inning, but the Maccabees avoided a five-inning game by plating another in the bottom half despite Pechefsky fanning three in the frame. SLC's pitcher started the sixth with a single, scoring on a YU error in left field to extend the lead back to eight runs. Hansberry and Stephens each drove in another run before a two-RBI double by Johnsen extended the lead to 11 runs. A pair of hits helped the Maccabees tack on another two scores in the sixth, but a strikeout and a pop-up to second ended the rally and sent the Gryphons back to Bronxville with another win.
