NEWARK, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence women's soccer team fell 2–0 on the road at Rutgers–Newark on Monday night. The Gryphons held the Scarlet Raiders scoreless after a pair of first-half goals.
The Scarlet Raiders controlled much of the early play and broke through in the 19th minute when Mariana Valencia scored off an assist from Annabella Velaj to put the hosts in front. The Gryphons responded with chances from
Viktoria Balbin and
Hannah Chaffin, but goalkeeper Shaina Sackett turned away SLC's best look of the half on a shot from Chaffin in the 27th minute. Rutgers–Newark doubled its lead just before the break as Ruby Hogue struck in the 41st minute to make it 2–0 at halftime. Sarah Lawrence showed more urgency in the second half, pressing forward through
Katey Beaver and Balbin while winning a corner in the 38th minute, but couldn't find a way past the Scarlet Raiders' back line.
Bella Vaca kept the Gryphons in reach with several saves, but Rutgers–Newark's early goals proved to be the difference as SLC was unable to mount a late comeback.
