How it Happened
The game started out with the teams jockeying for position, with a one-possession game through the first nine minutes and a stalemate at ten points apiece with 11:38 to play. Kelly broke the tie with a long-range connection before a MSMC turnover allowed Downes to score inside. The first year then found sophomore
Thomas Matonti on the ensuing SLC possession for a triple that capped an 8-0 run and put the Gryphons up 18-10. The Knights answered back with a three of their own immediately, but Matonti returned the favor and found Downes for a jumper. An empty possession by the Knights returned the ball to the Gryphons and
Andrew Kim stepped into a pass from
Kyle Jefferson to connect from distance and put the hosts up by double-digits. The Knights would respond throughout the remaining eight minutes, but would be unable to get within six or less and put the lead in jeopardy. The Gryphons maintained their advantage and a last-minute triple by Morel put the team up by 13 heading into the intermission.
A 6-0 run by Knights out of the half reduced the lead to seven points, but Kim and Kelly responded to stop the momentum and keep the hosts up by multiple possessions. Kelly hit a triple to put SLC up by double-digits again and Burman followed suit for a 45-32 lead with 15 minutes to play. The Gryphons would maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest, as scores by Burman and Morel kept the team ahead comfortably. In the final three minutes of play, the Gryphons saw a surge by their bench to seal the victory.
Brady Lason scored his first collegiate points after a nice find by
Elias Flaim before Noah Elovitz-Field got on the board thanks to a
Gavin Wright pass. A pair of MSMC free throws in the final two minutes closed the gap to 18 points, but that would be all as the Gryphons held on for a convincing home victory, their ninth straight over the Knights.
