KING'S POINT, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's swim team turned a dominant final day of competition into a 110-point cushion between them and the third-place MSMC Knights. The Gryphons had seven swimmers awarded with all-conference honors after three second-place relay finishes and a top-two individual swim as well.
Friday marked day one of the meet, with the Gryphons taking the pool for five events, including both 200 relays. The 200 freestyle relay kicked off the championship meet, with a third-place finish for
Julia Maecker,
Ava Greengrass,
Ella Hernan and
Kirsten Eads. Maecker and Greengrass returned to the pool for the 500 freestyle, alongside
Krista Burgess and
Olivia Huie. Maecker led the group with a third-place finish while Greengrass finished in sixth place. Burgess won her heat while earning a seventh-place finish and Huie rounded out the group of scorers for SLC with a 10th-place time of 6:50.15. The 200 I.M. had a pair of scorers for SLC, as Eads and
Cordelia Bay finished in sixth- and seventh-place respectively, both scoring for the Gryphons as they continued a strong start to the weekend. In the final individual event of the day, the Gryphons had a pair of senior scorers. Hernan and
Keilani Talma both placed in the top ten, with Talma securing a fourth-place finish and Hernan following behind in ninth place. The day wrapped up with the 200 medley relay, as Hernan, Bay, Talma and Eads took a second-place finish with a time of 2:03.19 that was under two seconds behind first-place USMMA.
In Saturday's opening session, the Gryphons got back into relay action with the 400 medley relay. Strong opening and anchoring splits by
Amelie Burg and Burgess helped the Gryphons to another second-place relay finish, with Burgess touching the wall just three tenths of a second ahead of the MSMC swimmer. Eads returned to action in the 400 I.M. alongside
Aubrey Rosser, with the duo finishing in fourth- and fifth-place respectively and earning valuable points for the Gryphons. Talma returned to the pool for the 100 butterfly, finishing third behind a pair of USMMA swimmers but over five seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher.
Hannah Drum and Bay finished in sixth and eighth in the same event, as the Gryphons scored three swimmers and continued to creep up the leaderboard. Five Gryphons scored in the 200 freestlye, with Talma, Hernan and Burg finishing in fifth through seventh while Greengrass toted a ninth-place finish and Huie touched the wall for the final scoring spot. In the 100 breaststroke, Bay continued a strong first campaign with SLC by earning a fifth-place finish while fellow first year Rosser touched the wall 10th. Drum wrapped up the trio of scorers in the event one spot behind Rosser as the Gryphons continued a strong all-around effort.
The 100 yard backstroke was the team's best individual event of the day, as Eads earned a second-place finish and locked in an all-conference spot alongside the standout relay swimmers. The sophomore was not the only Gryphon to excel in the event, Hernan and Burg finished directly behind Eads in third- and fourth-place respectively, all touching the wall within two seconds of eachother and over two seconds ahead of the fifth-place finisher. Burgess rounded out the event as the team's fourth scorer, with a ninth-place swim to cap an already-strong weekend. The team's distance swimmers continued the strong showing with four scorers in the 1000 freestyle. Maecker led the way with a third-place swim, just ahead of Greengrass's fifth-place finish. Huie and Joclyn Engel rounded out the SLC scorers in the event, with the first year touching the wall in ninth place while Engel finished 12th. The 200 yard backstroke was up next, with another strong SLC showing at the top of the results. Hernan led the way with a third-place swim, just one spot ahead of Eads, who continued an amazing weekend. The Gryphons really got going towards the end of the meet, with six scorers in the 100 freestyle, led by Talma in third and Burg in fifth. Drum and Burgess followed in eighth and ninth with Greengrass and Huie rounding out the impressive top-to-bottom effort with eleventh- and twelth-place finishes. Three Gryphons scored in the 200 breaststroke, with Bay leading the way in fifth place and Rosser and Allie Abemayor rounding out the event in 10th and 12th. The final event of the weekend was the 400 freestyle relay, as the Gryphons took another top-two finish, touching the wall over 10 seconds before the third-place group.
