How it Happened
The first quarter saw the Gryphons jump ahead to a 7-0 lead thanks to a second-chance score, a shot clock violation and a transition triple by Eng-Stewart after a Hudson steal. A putback score by Theriault and a Theriault-to-Hudson connection extended the lead to 11-2 halfway through the period as the Gryphons continued to start games strongly. A pair of Ashley Marrocco three-point scores bridged the gap, with a last-minute layup cutting the SLC lead to one. A late-minute layup by
Colleen Coughlin and another UMSV score sent the Gryphons into the second quarter with a two-point advantage. Despite the advantage, the Dolphins came out firing to start the second frame, with a pair of scores off SLC turnovers to take the team's first lead of the game. Eng-Stewart converted from inside before Hudson took a steal coast-to-coast and returned the lead to the Gryphons. The team continued on a 16-2 run as scores from Theriault, Eng-Stewart,
Kaila Dorch and Coughlin. A pair of Eng-Stewart layups sent the team into the break with a nine-point lead, as the hosts overcame the UMSV surge.
The Gryphons looked to continue building a steady lead in the second half, with three early points by Hudson expanding the SLC lead to double-digits once again and the Gryphons threatening to put the game out of reach. Instead, the hosts would go scoreless for nearly three minutes, letting the visitors close the gap to just five points. That would not be all, after trading points, the visitors would once again close the gap, this time tying the game at 42 points apiece with under three to play in the quarter. Hudson broke the stalemate, but another Marrocco triple gave the Dolphins an advantage in the final two minutes of play. After a one-for-two visit to the line for Theriault, an Eng-Stewart steal led to a
Darby Stayton basket as the first year's first score put the Gryphons ahead before the final ten minutes of play. Once again, the visitors answered early in a quarter, but six straight SLC points returned a two-possession lead to the hosts. The Dolphins kept within striking distance, but steady shooting at the free-throw line allowed the Gryphons to hold on for another conference victory.
