Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Clashes with Neighboring Panthers in Valentine's Day Matchup

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team forced 26 turnovers on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the hosting Purchase College Panthers on Saturday by a score of 60-67. The Gryphons will now wait until Saturday, February 21st as they wrap up the regular season against the hosting Bears of St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

Notable Performers How it Happened

The game started with offensive struggles for both teams, with a scoreless first two minutes and 51 seconds and three minutes and 53 seconds without a field goal. After the slow first four minutes, the Gryphons led 2-1 on the back of a Theriault jumper. Gabby Hudson and Jersana Moore converted for the Gryphons, helping the visitors to an early lead before an Eng-Stewart triple put the team up 9-4 with under three to play. The Panthers answered with a long-range connection of their own and a last-minute layup to tie the game at nine heading into the second quarter. The Panthers opened the second quarter with a score, but Dorch got on the board to return the score to a tie. The teams would go back-and-forth, with Coughlin striking from deep and Dorch, Hudson and Eng-Stewart all converting to keep the team in the game. The latter's pair of free throws put the Gryphons up two in the final minute, but once again the Panthers struck before the buzzer, this time with 18 seconds left to tie the game at the intermission.

The Gryphons got going immediately, with five straight points from Theriault catapulting them into the lead once again. The Panthers responded immediately to reclaim the lead momentarily until the script flipped and the Gryphons regained control. Another long-range connection from Eng-Stewart put SLC up by five with 4:33 remaining and Dorch followed suit with a triple to keep the Gryphons ahead under the three-minute mark. It would once again be a last-minute conversion by the Panthers that allowed them to narrow the gap, this time with a last-second three-pointer to take a 46-43 lead into the final ten minues of play. Theriault, Dorch, Coughlin and Hudson all converted in the final frame, but the Panthers did not allow the Gryphons back into the game, extending the lead to double-digits with under a minute to play. A last-minute triple by Eng-Stewart and a last-second score by Theriault would not be enough to bridge the gap as the Panthers earned the win to split the season series.
