HISTORY MADE! 2025-2026 Women’s Basketball Season Recap

4.20.26

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team had the best season in program history in 2025-2026. The Gryphons won 14 games, made the postseason for the first time, and completed one of the biggest year-over-year turnarounds in NCAA Division III women's basketball. Throughout the year, the Gryphons showcased a historically efficient offense with an aggressive, playmaking defense.

As a team, Sarah Lawrence established a new program record for field goal percentage, shooting an impressive 41 percent from the floor over the course of the season. The team's offensive success began early in the year, ranking in the top 15 in the country in field goal percentage at the winter break. The Gryphons' offensive efficiency was driven by strong ball movement and balanced scoring, as the team also set a new single-season assist record.

Defensively, the Gryphons were just as impactful. The 2025–2026 squad set a new program record for total steals in a season, applying constant pressure on opposing ball handlers and turning defense into offense. That disruptive style played a major role in several key runs throughout the year. One such stretch for the Gryphons was from November 26, 2025 to January 20, 2026 when the team went 9-1 with the sole loss coming at the hands of Skyline Conference champions Merchant Marine on the Mariners' Senior Night. During that run, the Gryphons defeated Hunter College 83-75, avenging their 88-36 loss from the year prior, and marking the program's first win over a team that would go on to appear in the NCAA Tournament.

The Gryphons also demonstrated an ability to perform under pressure. In a strong year for the Skyline Conference, where for the first time a team with double-digit conference wins would fall short of the playoffs, the Gryphons needed a win in the final game of the regular season to make the postseason. Facing a St. Joseph's-Brooklyn team on the road that had defeated the Gryphons 78-20 in the prior season, team captain and senior Colleen Coughlin entered her name and her team's name into the record books by scoring 23 points on 6-10 shooting from beyond the arc, and the Gryphons punched their ticket to the Skyline Tournament with a 78-70 victory.

Throughout the lineup, the Gryphons relied on a mix of experienced returners and emerging contributors who embraced their roles. Senior Gabby Hudson and freshman Sarah Theirault were both named to Skyline All-Conference Teams, marking the first time in program history that multiple Gryphons received these honors in a single season. Senior Kaila Dorch, sophomore Kendall Stephens, and Theirault also set the single-season record for games played for the Gryphons.

While the program will miss their five outstanding graduating seniors, the Gryphons will return most of their scoring next season. The program is expected to add several exciting freshmen and transfers. Looking forward, the Gryphons are well-positioned to continue their upward trajectory heading into the 2026–2027 season.
