YONKERS, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), 2-0, on Saturday, September 19, in the Gryphons' Skyline Conference opener at Fleming Soccer Field.
The Gryphons (1-3-3, 0-1-0 Skyline) were outshot 23-4 by the Mariners (2-2-4, 1-0-1 Skyline). USMMA held advantages in shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (7-0).
Jonah Zalis played all 90 minutes in goal for SLC, making five saves. Both teams were called for 10 fouls and received one yellow card.
Freshman
Matthew Donnis led the Gryphons with two shots, including one on target.
Ryan Gunderson recorded SLC's other shot on goal.
USMMA registered three shots during the opening 18 minutes, with none finding the target, before Donnis recorded the Gryphons' first shot of the night in the 19th minute.
A minute later, the Mariners hit the top of the crossbar before Cameron Westerfield collected the rebound and headed the ball into the back of the net to give USMMA a 1-0 lead.
Gunderson recorded SLC's first shot on goal in the 26th minute, while Donnis followed with another in the 34th minute. The Mariners added two more shots before halftime but maintained their 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
USMMA came out aggressively in the second half, registering five shots, including three on target, during the opening seven minutes. Zalis made two saves during the stretch, while Berkson recorded a team save to keep the Gryphons within one.
The Mariners added seven more shots before doubling their advantage in the 79th minute, scoring off a rebound after a shot struck the post.
USMMA outshot the Gryphons 3-1 over the final 10 minutes to secure the 2-0 victory.
Josh Cecutti recorded Sarah Lawrence's final shot in the 88th minute, sending it over the crossbar.
The Gryphons return to action on Monday, September 21, when they host Pratt Institute in a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
