UNION, N.J. — The Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team battled Kean University to a 1-1 draw on Monday, September 21, as senior
Phoebe Workman scored her third goal of the season to help the Gryphons remain unbeaten through their first six matches.
With the draw, Sarah Lawrence moves to 2-0-4 on the season, while Kean now stands at 4-3-1.
The Gryphons generated the first offensive opportunities of the night, with senior
Madeline Moor recording Sarah Lawrence's first shot in the fourth minute. Senior
Katey Beaver followed with a shot in the seventh minute.
Kean answered with its first shot in the seventh minute and quickly applied pressure, registering five additional shots over the next six minutes. The Cougars broke through in the 13th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Sarah Lawrence continued to create chances and eventually found the equalizer in the 34th minute. Workman headed home her third goal of the season and sixth of her career off a corner kick to bring the Gryphons level.
Kean held a 5-2 advantage in shots during the opening portion of the half before Sarah Lawrence responded offensively. The Cougars edged the Gryphons 3-2 in shots over the final 11 minutes, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
The second half remained closely contested, with Kean holding a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots. Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper
Bella Vaca came up with four saves in the second half to keep the match level, while Kean's goalkeeper made five saves.
Neither team could find a game-winning goal in the final 45 minutes, as the Gryphons earned their fourth draw of the season.
Kean finished with a 27-18 advantage in shots, though both teams recorded 10 shots on goal. The Cougars also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Sarah Lawrence committed six fouls compared to four by Kean.
Both teams were issued one yellow card, with Sarah Lawrence receiving its card in the 32nd minute and Kean receiving its card in the 90th minute.
The Gryphons return to action on Wednesday, September 23, when they host William Paterson University in a non-conference matchup at Fleming Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
