GOAL
The goal of the 30 a Day Fitness Program is to encourage everyone to incorporate physical activity into a healthy daily lifestyle.
Participants are challenged to perform 30 minutes of continuous exercise every day throughout the summer. Points are earned for each day of activity and streak bonuses can be accrued to further reward consistency.
Unlike the January Faculty/Staff Challenge, the 30 a Day Summer Program is intended to be fun and cooperative. Set your own fitness goals and encourage your friends to make exercise a part of your daily life. A 30 minute workout every day of the summer amounts to 45 hours of activity (nearly two full days).
ELIGIBILITY
All members of the Sarah Lawrence College community are invited to participate, including students, faculty, staff, alumni and their respective families.
PROGRAM DURATION
The 30 a Day Fitness Program runs 90 days beginning Monday, June 3 and ending on Saturday, August 31.
30 MINUTES A DAY
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that all adults strive for at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week. Expanding activity to 300 minutes (5 hours) per week provides more health benefits with additional benefits for activity beyond this amount.
Every day of the program, participants will be encouraged to perform 30 minutes of aerobic physical activity. This includes cardiovascular workouts, strength training, flexibility exercises and participation in sports.
Other examples of aerobic physical activity include walking to work, gardening/yard work, dancing, bicycling and jumping rope.
POINTS AND BONUSES
One point is awarded for each day in which a participant completes 30 minutes of physical activity. The activity need not be continuous but should be completed in segments of no shorter than 10 minutes.
Two bonus points will be awarded to each participant who completes workouts on at least five days in a calendar week, reaching the benchmark of 2.5 hours of weekly physical activity.
REGISTRATION / REPORTING WORKOUTS
Registration and workout-reporting will be done exclusively online. Once you complete the participant registration form, your name will be added manually to the progress board within a few days. Workouts may take several minutes to process but will update automatically on the scoreboard.
Workouts logged more than one day in advance or more than five days after their completion may be disqualified at organizers' discretion.
DISCLAIMER
Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. Participants should determine their level of effort for physical activity relative to their level of fitness. Individuals with chronic conditions should understand whether and how their conditions affect their ability to do regular physical activity safely.
OTHER CONDITIONS
Program organizers reserve the right to modify rules at any time in order to address any unforeseen circumstances. In all cases, fairness to participants shall be paramount.
