Michael Dowd was named Head Coach for Men's Tennis in February 2015.
Before coming to SLC, Dowd was the Head Coach of Women’s Tennis at the University of Pennsylvania for 12 years. There, he led Penn to its first-ever Ivy League Championship in 2001 and repeated as title-winners in ‘02 and ‘07. Dowd’s Quakers also earned two NCAA tournament at-large bids (2003 and ‘06) and won three matches in Division I Championship competition.
From 2004 to ’12, Dowd served as Director of Tennis at Willowbrook Swim and Tennis Club. In 2012, he took over as Director of Tennis at nearby Bronxville Field Club.
Dowd was a collegiate player at Division I George Washington University. At GWU, he played in two Atlantic 10 championship matches and was named A-10 Senior of the Year in 1994.
Dowd’s passion for the sport of tennis stems from a family history of coaching. Michael’s father Marty has coached the men’s team at The Catholic University of America for over 50 years, accruing over 500 wins and leading the Cardinals to the NCAA Division III Championship in 2014. Michael’s mother Jone was also a coach and is formerly Senior Associate Director of Athletics at CUA, while Michael’s sister Dana has coached the women’s team at CUA for more than 15 seasons.
