Sovanny Ebbessen

Sovanny Kon Ebbesen was named Sarah Lawrence College Head Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Coach in August of 2018.

In 2019, Ebbesen led the women's volleyball team to double-digit wins (13), tying the record for most wins in a season upon transitioning to NCAA Division III status. Under Ebbesen, SLC set team records for digs and total blocks. In addition, Ebbesen coached Melanie Coleman to Second Team Skyline All-Conference accolades. 

On the men's side Ebbesen guided the men's volleyball team to its most wins in 2019 since joining the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.

Ebbesen joins the Gryphons after spending last season in the same role at Lehman College. Ebbesen guided the Lightening men’s volleyball program to 15 wins in 2018, posting a 4-1 record against Skyline opponents, reaching the CUNYAC Semifinals for a second consecutive season. Ebbesen coached Yaw Eshun, who earned CUNYAC All-Star Second Team honors after leading the squad in kills. In 2018, Ebeesen was a NCAA Division III AVCA National Coaches Poll member.

Prior to Lehman, Ebbesen was the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Williston State College in Williston, ND. She assisted in practice plans for individual practice sessions, training and conditioning, overseeing student academic progress, recruitment, game strategy, skills development and administrative duties.  Before moving to the college ranks, Ebbesen, was the varsity coach at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, Alaska. While there, she posted a mark of 112-19 including four regional championships in her six seasons at the helm. 

During her tenure as a high school coach she also was the head coach for the Alaska Junior Volleyball Club where she guided the U16s while being the club administration for girls ages 11-18. 

A native of North Pole, Alaska, Ebbesen was a four-year letterwinner and two-year team captain playing volleyball at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  A defensive specialist, Ebbesen was a four year letter winner and captain her final two seasons for the Nanooks.  A 1995 graduate, Ebbesen holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Economics and Business Administration.
