ResultsSaratoga Springs, NY - October 29, 2011The Men's and Women's Rowing Teams headed upstate this weekend to compete in the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratogoa Springs, NY this Saturday, October 29.
Despite an unseasonably early storm this weekend, the Sarah Lawrence Rowing team took to the waters of Saratoga Springs, NY, to compete in the Head of the Fish Regatta this Saturday, October 29. The Head of the Fish brings out some big-name rowing teams such as the crews from Colgate, UMass and Vassar to race in what this year turned out to be a wintery regatta despite the calendar reading pre-Halloween.
The Gryphons top finish of the day was in the Women's Open 4+ (Club) race that saw SLC finishing in 6th with a time of 15:59.29. In the collegiate events, the Women's Novice 4+ and Varsity 4+ races saw the Gryphons in 20th and 22nd place respectively. The Men's Novice Four ended the day in 19th place and the Men's Varisty Four in 32nd.
This season has already been marked by weather-complications for the Gryphons, who rowed out to the starting line of the Head of the Connecticut Regatta on October 16, only to see that race cancelled. The Fall Met Champs, which were to take place on October 30, were also cancelled as the snow piled up and the winds whipped high this Sunday, sending boats and rowers indoors.
Head Coach Jenny Sherman was proud of her team's performance this Saturday. She stated following the race, "Sarah Lawrence held its own, with admirable performances from the varsity women's boat. This was the first race for our novice rowers, who showed considerable promise with their efforts."
She went on to cite the efforts of many individuals on her team, including varsity rower and bow seat
Jocelyn Packman (), who fought off a crab early in her event, quickly getting her oar unstuck and getting back into swing to help the women pull past six other crews. Also notable, she stated, were the impressive first races steered and called by coxswains
Michael Feinberg (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) (women's novice 4+), Nia Jamshidi (men's novice 4+) and
Caroline Pless () (women's varsity 4+).
Next up for the Gryphons will be the Dowling Alumni Cup on November 6, in Oakdale, NY.
