Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Though three Gryphons scored in double figures, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was overcome by Bard College, 68-59, in a non-conference game at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Sunday.
Both teams struggled early, as a three-pointer by Bard (3-4) was the only score for nearly four minutes. The Raptors jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but a handful of points for Sarah Lawrence (3-4), including four by rookie
Brendan O'Connell (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover), tied the score at 8-8.
A 12-3 Raptor run gave the visitors their largest lead of the first half at 20-11, but the Gryphons were not ready to fade away quietly. Five points from
Mat Gerak (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and another five from
Niko Yuvienco (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) closed the gap to 24-21.
A pair of converted free throws by Gerak brought the Gryphons within one at 26-25, but the Raptors crept away for a 31-26 halftime advantage. Gerak led all players with 10 points in the first half.
In the second half, SLC wasted no time in erasing the deficit. O'Connell recorded back-to-back layups to start the period, and a three-pointer by the rookie leveled the game at 35-35. Another layup from O'Connell gave the Gryphons their first lead at 37-35 with 13.5 minutes to play.
The teams alternated scoring through five more ties, and with six minutes remaining, the score was deadlocked at 46-46. Late in the period, the tide turned, and Bard went on a 10-3 run to take a 56-49 advantage with 1:17 to play.
With the Gryphons forced to foul to save time, the Raptors iced the game by shooting 10-for-12 from the foul line in the final minute. Despite scoring on their possessions, the Green and White ran out of time, and Bard walked away with the 68-59 win.
Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) led the Gryphons with 16 points and collected nine rebounds. Despite scoring only 10 points—well below his previous average of 16.5 points per game—rookie
Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac) posted his fourth-straight double-double, tallying 11 rebounds on the day. Gerak also reached double-digit scoring, pitching in a season-high 13 points with five rebounds and two blocks.
For Bard, Alex Fabean-Scotch led all players with 21 points, while Lamar Powell totaled 19 points. Siondueh Burnette was a force under the boards, pulling in a game-high 13 rebounds and scoring 13 points.
Sarah Lawrence concludes the calendar year by hosting Alfred University on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. The Gryphons then return to action on January 7 for a rematch against Maritime College.
