Men's Soccer Stumbles against Berkeley

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer was defeated by Berkeley College (N.Y.), 6-1, in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Aviator Sports Complex on Wednesday.

After the Gryphons successfully defended six corner kicks in the opening minutes, Sarah Lawrence (1-6, 1-2 HVIAC) capitalized on a Berkeley (7-2, 2-0 HVIAC) foul in the 20th minute. Sophomore forward Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) served up a free kick from beyond midfield, and junior Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) was able to control the attack and find the back of the net for the game's first goal. The score was Pujari's fourth on the season.

Berkeley pounded the SLC goal for much of the first half, but SLC keeper Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) notched five saves in the first half and seven in the game. Berkeley managed to tie the score in the 28th minute, when Dare Aniyikaye converted on a crossing pass, making it a 1-1 game heading into halftime.

After the break, the Knights took full control of the game. Berkeley racked up 28 shots in the game, keeping 13 of them on-frame. Abdelwahab Mohamed scored the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute, and Berkeley netted two more balls in the next seven minutes.

Berkeley went ahead 5-1 in the 65th minute, and Mohamed rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the day in the 86th minute.

Sarah Lawrence is back in action on Saturday when the Gryphons travel to Edison, N.J. for a 4 p.m. game against HVIAC newcomer The King's College.
